As neat as a pin eight men enter on that winter evening, the local pub"Armelien" near the Silesian station in Friedrichshain.
With tails, cylinder, patent leather shoes and white silk scarves they pay "Plank-Paul", they have just been taken to the grave, their respects. In "Naubur" which is the name of a restaurant in the Breslauer Straße 1 (today: Am Ostbahnhof / corner Holzmarktstraße) named after its owner, something has to be done now. Because this is where the 40 carpenters from Hamburg who are employed in the construction of the new subway line Gesundbrunnen Leinestraße are hanging out. The confident Hamburger citizens are many Berliner "ring, savings and sports clubs" - syndicates of local thieves, swindlers, robbers, burglars, pimps, drug dealers, hustlers and especiallyracketeer - a thorn in their flesh.
The goons from northern germany undermine by their sole presence the authority of "muscle-Adolf" Leib, the diminutive chairman of "conviviality Association Immertreu" and his men. Host Naubur had dared to denounce his "protection contract" with the Berlin "brothers" just as the carpenters moved in as regulars. The Immertreu-club flag still hangs in the bar on the wall.
And there was another reason for showing the disrespectful craftsmen who the boss was. For a day earlier, on 28 December, the hamburgers were celebrating in a bar, also in the ill reputed neighborhood around the Silesian Station.
A drunken 18-year-old carpenter stepped on the toes of the Berliner Ring brothers. Against the inevitable beating he had defended himself with a knife. After the hamburgers had been kicked to the curb, the remaining guests noticed that a "brother" named Malchin from "men's glee club north" - a friend of Immertreu underworld union - was stabbed left lying on the ground. His life was in danger.
Since mutual assistance is obliged by the club statutes the time had come "to kill the dog." Fortunately apparently only a few hamburgers are in the guest room left. The stabber from the previous day just bought at "eel-Hehdes" Fish-Shop his supper, when the "always faithful" pounce on him and beat him up severely. But in the back room sitting artisans are aware of the robbery and jump in to help the hard-pressed colleague. Muscle Adolfs people use pool cues, hit with table and chair legs. Eels and liquor bottles are flying through the air, splintered glass, and the carpenters show the many uses of their tools Hammers, axes, angle iron and wood crashing down on the Berliners. In the collective memory the fishmonger stands out. He is caught between the fronts and calls during the biggest helterskelter constantly "eels, eels" - then he passes out.
After about ten minutes, the Hanseatic men have the upper hand and muscle Adolf calls to retreat. Previously, he was served a special humiliation: The fellow guild member of the carpenters, "a huge guy with big shining brass earrings," had punched with his fist on the cylinder, so that it slid down over his ears: muscle Adolf looks like a laughing stock whose formerly elegant festive clothing is ruined.
Still on the way out, while taking outside the injured, the Ring brothers swear revenge for their failed vendetta. When the police arrive, there is a deceptive calm. Investigations are doomed to failure, since only one crook could be arrested, who remembers nothing because he "had received a blow to the head from behind". The Hamburgians prefer to remain silent against the cops too. The bystanders observing the, as one newspaper wrote, "interesting evening entertainment", mostly prostitutes and notorious young crooks known as "rat boys", said that "Polacks" were responsible for the fight.
Before the officials withdraw, they order the Hamburgians to lock themself up till sunrise in the "Naubur". A grave mistake.
In the meantime the berliner brothers had withdrawn secretly into "Leo's court" on the oppsite side of the street and "ring alarm" is triggered. In Immertreu headquarter, the "Black Whale" and in various dives in Moabit and Wedding (a district in berlin), around the Alexanderplatz in Neukölln rang the phones, alarm level three. That meant all available armed forces have immediately move to Breslauerstraße . The Hamburg were looking for reinforcements too. Of six fellow Berliner masons however only two came. The others are caught and beaten.
"Storm in and beat them up" - that is muscle Adolphus tactical instruction. Around midnight, the pubs door is kicked in and around 150 ring brothers of "Always faithful" and "North" go off on the remaining approximately 20 carpenters. The subsequent twenty-minute "battle of the Silesian Station" put everything behind what the usual brutality neighborhood had ever experienced. The Naubur is quickly shattered completely, Leos court severely affected. The Breslau streets and the neighboring side streets look like after a bomb attack. Moaning and screaming of the wounded. The "brothers" are fighting with knives and iron bars, the Hanseatic defend themselves with axes and knives. Broken ribs, smashed noses, smashed heads, and blood everywhere. As the carpenters absolutely refuse to capitulate, the ring brothers pull their guns. Later around 100 cartridges are collected.
The Berliner bricklayer Mörlitz who fought on the side of the room people is lying dead on the pavement. Also a second fatality, a Hamburgian, later is being talked of. Ten critically injured Hanseaten are brought to nearby hospitals. The stabber survived seriously injured.
Headlines such as "criminal association Immertreu assault Hamburger carpenters", or "The fight against of the carpenters against the goblins" show that the sympathies of the Berlin press, lie on the part of the craftsmen. But that should change soon.
The police arrest the usual suspects, including Adolf Leib who is injured at his wrist. Under pressure from the public, the President of the police bans the ring clubs. The answer follows immediately. On December, recalls the famous Berlin lawyer Erich Freyeight gorgeous princesses enter his office. The broads from the Board of Immertreu" led by Hulda Spindler called "stock kitty" put loads of jewelery ("this isnt hot stuff") on the table of the lawyer, and request him to take over the defense, Frey says. And there he is now, fighting police management, press and public opinion, he does something completely out of the ordinary. He pulls his biggest rival, the second Berlin celebrity lawyer, Max Alsberg into the mix.
The five-day trial begins on 4 February 1929 before the Moabit criminal court. The three colleagues manage by consistent downplaying the ring clubs to draw sympathy away from the artisans on the side of the criminals. Because in the meantime it became known that Malchin has died of his injuries - and in Dresden and Kiel, the carpenters, who were hastily brought into connection with the pimp environment had gotten into physical altercations. The trial becomes a farce. Innocent angels everywhere.
Nobody had seen anything, because "it was dark". The few willing to testify are presented by the lawyers as untrustworthy. All the main witnesses against "Always Faithful" drop out(which, as it was later called, was honored by the brothers with 300 Reichsmark). As Erich Frey is stolen his noble fur coat during the hearing, he uses a grotesque glorification of Always Faithful: "You see, your honor, such thefts would not happen if you legitimize the club brothers again. They have prevented such things. "
Muscle Adolf convicted of simple breach of the peace to ten months probation, another brother, "Beer-Albert" gets five months. The charge of assault resulting in death is dropped as unclear is who has beaten, stabbed or shot. The other seven defendants were acquitted for lack of evidence. "North" and "Always trust" may be followed forward to the re-admission of their clubs. The Hamburg stabber has been acquitted. The court granted him self-defense.
Again gets the "Always trust" Chef into the headlines, when not completely voluntarily movie director Fritz Lang hires him as a well-paid "consultant" for his world-famous, 1931 premiered movie "M - a city looking for a murderer". It depicts the ring associations concerned for their honor among thieves, in a race with the police a multiple child killer.
The "waiter and manager" Adolf Leib just like most ring brothers and "professional criminals" are imprisoned in a concentration camp by the Nazis and are killed.
Christmas Eve 1929 Erich Frey receives a packet. Its a valuable fur coat with the message: "In honesty lost, honestly aquired. Stock kitty. "
