Gang violence is ravaging Azusa, here’s what the city is doing about it

For the past three weeks, Azusa police have worked to reduce the gang-related violence seen in the city in recent months.

The violence has largely taken place in Atlantis Gardens — a cluster of about 40 buildings near Rockvale and Alosta avenues, according to an Azusa Police Department statement.

A man was shot and killed on a doorstep on the 600 block of North Rockvale Avenue in November, and one teen and one man were killed in a shootout in the 600 block of East Sixth Street on Jan. 8.

In the past three weeks, the Azusa Police Department has received mutual aid assistance from police in Baldwin Park, Claremont, El Monte, Irwindale, Pomona, Upland and West Covina, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office and the U.S. Marshals Service to add extra coverage seven days a week, Azusa police Chief Steve Hunt told the City Council on Monday.

Those efforts led to the Jan. 21 arrests of a Riverside man and three minors on weapons and drug violations in the area of Sixth Street and Cedarglen Avenue and three arrests during a nine-location search warrant execution Feb. 1.

“We’ve seen a reduction in gang violence in the last three weeks,” Hunt said at Monday night’s City Council meeting. “But continuing with assertive police action is important.”

Azusa’s Light and Water Department also aided in the efforts by improving street lighting in the Atlantis Gardens area, which drone footage showed to have previously been poor, Hunt said.

“We’re not giving people involved in this type of activity nooks and crannies to hide in, and we’re looking for other ways to improve safety through environmental design,” Hunt said.

Data collected by the law enforcement agencies indicate that most of the people involved are under 18 years old, Hunt said. As a result, Azusa police have held meetings at Azusa and Gladstone high schools to make parents aware of the situation and to help them identify at-risk teens.

The Azusa Unified School District also has resources to help at-risk teenagers who may be suffering from drug addiction, Hunt said.

Hunt also asked residents who witness crimes to report them by calling 911, the Azusa Police Department’s tip line at 626-812-3272 or, for anonymous tips, Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477

I’m assuming these shootings are between Azusa 13 and Sentinal Boys (SBS).

It reminds me of what you said in another thread about those that go way out of their way to beef with more hoods when you already have a lot beef back home. I’m pretty sure KAM is all over SBS original hood. Azusa is one of those one gang only kind of towns, I guess until now.

But yeah I think as long as LA has gangs, there’s going to be spill over into neighboring cities and counties.

Seems that way if LA keeps on gentrifying all the poor neighborhoods and keep building luxury apartments.

Our new governor Gavin Newsom said he is going to start getting on cities that are only building luxury apartments and not any affordable housing units.
He's threatening to cut state funding from cities who aren't building affordable housing and only building luxury apartments.

He just filed a lawsuit against Huntington Beach out here in OC for refusing to build affordable housing.
