West Side Pirus [WSP] are a predominately African-American street gang located on the westside of Compton, CA. They were originally known as the Piru Street Boys founded around 1969 by Sylvester Scott and Vincent Owens making them one of the oldest Black gangs in LA County. The founders named their gang, Piru, after the street they lived on in the western section of Compton.
When Raymond Washington was attempting to transform street groups into the Crips, he was able to convince the leadership of the Pirus to embrace the Crip’s identity for a very short time in 1970. That relationship was severed because the Pirus had already been engaged in conflict with Mac Thomas and the Compton Crips.
The Pirus eventually broke away from the Crips, severing all ties, and then became one of the main rivals to the Crips. In from 1971 to 1973 the violence between the Pirus and the Crips in Compton escalated resulting in several murders.
