A former Inglewood police officer who allegedly flashed a firearm at a motorist in a threatening manner while off-duty pleaded no contest today, the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office announced.

Officer Michael Lewis Robinson, 44, was charged with one felony count of brandishing at a person in a motor vehicle and one misdemeanor count of assault with a deadly weapon, authorities said.

The charges stem from an incident on March 31, 2008, in which Robinson was driving down the 405 Freeway with his two children – ages 6 and 11 – when he allegedly flashed a firearm in a threatening manner at another driver, authorities said.

Deputy District Atty. Amy Pellman Pentz said the incident could be characterized as an act of road rage. “A person with no self-control should not be a police officer or own a gun,” she said.

Lewis is expected to be sentenced to three years’ probation after completing 250 hours of community service and an anger management program.

He is ordered to return for sentencing on May 19, 2011.
