Ben “Taco” Owens from Pay Bacc Crip to Paying Back the community

Gardena, CA – Ben “Taco” Owens is a former gang member that talked about his life growing up in Gardena and becoming a member of the Paybacc Crips (PBC). He also talked about drug use and multiple trips to the penitentiary. After being released from prison in 2004, he decided to make a change, and worked on his sobriety and created a community center in his original Gardena community.

Taco founded Detours Mentoring Group and he is also a member of the Southern California Cease Fire Committee, which is a collective of several community activists aimed at reducing violent crime in Los Angeles County. The Cease Fire meetings have been held every Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. for the last 10 years in South LA. We caught up with Taco at his outreach center in Gardena for this interview.
