Film on Los Angeles Black Panthers wins award at Pan African Film Festival

Last month, the film, 41st & Central, the documentary about the Los Angeles chapter of the Black Panther Party, won an award for audience choice for best documentary. The Los Angeles Black Panthers or the So Cal chapter have been know for many activities, but in 1969 Alprentice Bunchy Carter and John Huggins were murdered at the UCLA campus because of a rift that they had with Ron Karenga’s US Organization.

Geronimo “ji-Jaga” Pratt, served 25 years in prison until attorney Johnnie Cochran won his release in 1997. But they were also known for a 5-hour shootout that they had with the LAPD and SWAT officers at their headquarters on 41st & Central.

This film tells the never told story about the Los Angeles Black Panthers with interviews of all the principal persons involved during that era and historians including, Geronimo Ji Jagga Pratt, Elaine Brown, Kathleen Cleaver, Ericka Huggins, Roland Freeman, Wayne Pharr, Jeffrey Everett, Bernard Parks, Wesley Kabaila, and Dr. Scot Brown. It won an audience choice award for best documentary presented by CCH Pounder at the Pan African Film Festival.
