LA gang member gets 40 years for shooting man

Associated Press | March 26, 2013

LOS ANGELES—Federal prosecutors say a South Los Angeles gang member has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for the close-range shooting death of a 24-year-old father in front of his 2-year-old son.

A U.S. attorney’s statement says Anthony “Bandit” Gabourel received the sentence in a Los Angeles courtroom Monday. He was convicted in July after a second trial.

Prosecutors say Gabourel and another member of the Pueblo Bishops Bloods shot Francisco Cornelio as he vacuumed his car alongside his 2-year-old son. They say Cornelio was not a gang member, but was targeted because he was of Mexican descent.

Two other members of the gang were convicted with Gabourel in a major racketeering case brought by federal prosecutors who allege the gang has used violence and intimidation to control housing projects.
