Salt Lake City’s federal courtroom had an unusual occurrence yesterday when Siale Angilau, 25, an alleged member of the Tongan Crips was shot and ki*led by deputy U.S. marshal during court proceedings. Angilau attacked a witness who was testifying against him, federal law enforcement official said.

Angilau was not restrained during the trial. It is routine practice for federal trial defendants to be unrestrained when appearing before a jury, said Melodie Rydalch, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney’s office. Rydalch went on to say that the defendant looked as though he had a pencil or pen in his hand when he lunged towards the witness and that’s when the deputy fired at Angilau, shooting him in the chest. He later died at the local hospital according to authorities.

The trial is based on a Rico case involving the Tongan street gang which has been going on for some time. Proceedings had just begun when Angilau attacked, “Angilau apparently rushed and attacked a cooperating witness and was shot several times by law enforcement in front of the court and the jury,” the judge wrote. The case was being heard before U.S. District Judge Tena Campbell, who declared a mistrial.

Angilau was among 17 members and blankociates of the group indicted on racketeering charges. Prosecutors allege the group was a criminal enterprise responsible for robberies and some murders.
