Near Western Ave and 70th Street in South LA, an LAPD officer was shot multiple times on Thursday afternoon at about 2:45 p.m. The shooter was able to escape but over 72 city blocks covering nearly 800 homes have been included in a police perimeter where they are currently looking for two suspects that the LAPD believe are responsible for the shooting.

This area of Los Angeles is among one of the most violent in South Los Angeles and falls within LAPD’s 77th Division. There are two major black gangs in the area, the Eight Tray Gangster Crips and to the west of Western are the Rollin’ 60s Crips, but this incident has not been described as gang-related at this time.

The LAPD are searching for two suspects described as black men approximately 18 to 25 years old. One was seen wearing a white shirt with black pants while the other was described as wearing a white shirt with long blue sleeves and dark pants.

The shooting followed an investigation into car burglaries in the area. Several people have been taken into custody, but the actual shooter is believed to be in hiding in the perimeter.

One unidentified officer was rushed to California hospital where he is in currently in stable condition and expected to make a full recovery. Although the officer was shot several times in the torso and arm, the department issued vest, according to Dr. Gudata Hinika, played a significant role in mitigating further injury and possibly death.

This is the third set of officers shot in the last week according to Chief Charlie Beck.
