LOS ANGELES – Several Oscar Grant supporters are now demanding that the Federal government investigate claims that BART officers violated the civil rights of Grant and several other passengers on the train when BART officers detained and later shot and killed Grant. On July 8 a jury found former BART officer Johannes Mehserle guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the January 1, 2009 shooting death of Grant.
Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Robert Perry is scheduled to sentence Mehserle on November 5, 2010 where he faces a maximum sentence of 14 years in prison. Civil rights activist are asking that Federal charges be filed against former BART officers Anthony Pirone and Marisol Dominici who were both terminated from BART.
