Aliso Village Housing Projects destroyed: Now Pueblo del Sol

In 1999 the City of Los Angeles began the demolition of the Aliso Village Housing projects located on the west side of where the 101 Hollywood Freeway and 10 San Bernardino Freeway intersect. This was where the East LA Dukes, a Hispanic street gang, where located for many years. Many thought that the gang along with surrounding gangs, Primera Flats, Cuatro Flats and The Mob Crew would have a lesser presence in the community, but not only did the ELA gang reclaim the community after construction, rivalries with other neighborhoods continued.
The new 29-acre parcel is called Pueblo Del Sol and the footage below was shot on May 9, 2003 during the reconstruction phase of the project. The new construction is operated by a private company, the McCormack Baron Ragan Corporation, but administered by the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles.
Through a HOPE VI demolition grant program introduced by the Clinton administration in 1993, the Housing and Urban Development provided funds for the demolition of Aliso Village and the construction of Pueblo del Sol. Pueblo del Sol’s design consists of detached and semi-detached single family houses. The project reduced the number of units at the site by 30%.

First of all Aliso Village has always been Primera Flats. Primera Flats had that land before Aliso was even built. we controlled the projects. In the 80’s alot of other hoods came up trying to catch some fame by claiming Aliso Village as there hood. At one point there was Primera Flats, Al Capone, TMC, East Coast Crips(the only black gang in Boyle Heights), AV Fellas, Rascals, and ELA 13. Primera Flats throughout the 80’s smashed on all of them. Flats Kicked out Al Capone. Now theyre in the SGV in Covina. Flats kicked out the East Coast Crips and sent them back to South Central where the West Side Primera Flats still smashes on them. ELA 13 got kicked out and sent up the hill. TMC got kicked out along with the East Coast Crips and is now from 1st street to 3rd street. TMC which stands for The Mobb Crew used to be clicked up with the East Coast Crips and used to be known as The Mexican Crips. AV fellas and Rascals disappeared. they ended up being forced to either stop banging or get into Primera Flats or ELA 13. Now even though its called Pueblo del Sol it still belongs to Primera Flats

Primera Flats got kicked out of Aliso a long time ago by all the other gangs, they use to have to sneak around Aliso. The got kicked out up to the top of the hill by the big clock on 1st street. Al Capone, TMC, ECC, ELA Dukes ran the projects in th 80’s & 90’s. Any Flats that lived in Aliso would have there homes blasted on all the time by all the other gangs thats why they had to sneak around.

I grew up in Aliso Village and remember all the gangs there. My first boyfriend was “Joker” from Al Capone and had a “Crip” member live right across the street from us. They usto hang out in the “patio” in the middle of the night playing their music so loud and you couldn’t say anything for the fear of being shot. And trust me.. music was not the only things you would hear… ughh still makes my stomach turn
I also grew up in Aliso Village. I remember Al Capone – Arturo (Main Person), Chino, Indio, Joker -not really, and others. I used to hang out with them on Via Portola. Those were the days. We moved out when the fight broke out between Primera and Al Capone.

Yes, gangs are dumb – but if you live in the hood, what can you do. I used to hang around Al Capone in the early days – Early to mid 80’s. They were more in to the Coke business. Not so much bangers – but when Primera started getting crazy in Via Portola Al Capone did not back down. I do remember Crips hanging out with some Al Capone Member – mostly Indio (Indio would fight with EEC in the past and never backed down – he earned their respect) and Bebe. If you were there in the early 80’s you know the crowds that used to hang out in front of Utah Elemantary at night. I still remember going home to via portola and a fight (gun fight had just started) – Some guy – Herro?Lupe? (white guy blue eyes) – from Al Capone dropped an uzzi in front of us – thats when we decided to move. That same night Primer crashed a car in to a few cars in the parking lot – the bad things was that Al capone had no cars parked there just cars from hard working folks. And Yes they were good old days growing up and seeing all the madness. I am glad that I experienced this childhood and will never forget Arturo from AL CAPONE his wife DEDE and son. Here is the truth about the gangs in the projects. No reason to lie, no bias. Here is the truth. PF is the first gang that controlled the projects. And they were the first kicked out. they had a little corner of the hood. they could not roam no where else. ECC controlled many patios , 1st stores, and middle of the projects. East LA dukes had a corner over there by Utah school. TMC got booted to Pico Aliso. Cuatro flats was Pico Stoners. Clearance street was small gang that beefed with gangs up the hill like tinyboys , street boys. Alcopone got high on their on supply and lost territory, Pf came back in 90’s when the crips was being kicked out by housing authority and charging them with trespassing. bottom line there were always a member from one of the gangs in the hood, they all grew up together playing football and basketball. alot of those guys are blood related. Like “polo” and “bandit” from different gangs. Where white boy LALO? LUPE? he was a crip , then alcapone then flat.

I’m almost 40 and moved to AZ with my wife like 20 years ago and never went back…this all seems like another world now…LOL Ironically, reading blogs on a gang website have brought back some good memories, I guess a few bad ones, but mostly good. I remember when ECC would jack boom boxes from individuals walking on first street. I remember JoJo – great cat when I knew him even sported a mohawk – lived with his Grandma near Via Portola. I remember “Chaka” lived accross the street from Via Portola. As a kid I remember so much like the season – bike season, skateboard season, whatever was fun. I remember the house parties – as kids (freaking/dancing). I grew up going to Utah street school and knew indivduals from different gangs – even some where parents where from one gangs and kids from another. I Remember that before alcapone started selling on Via Portola all was calm up till flats started trying to control. Don’t know much after that – I moved to the SF valley – Another saga of gangsters i got to know.
Thank God for Aliso Village! Thanks to ECC, TMC, CF, ALCAPONE. DUKES And PF members for allowing Me to dribble my ball through the whole hood and play sports. they knew “I did not bang I bust a good ryme” The real beef was when the Aliso gangs fought the gangs up the hill for the regular non gang member were allowed to go to hollenbeck and roosevelt. Once the Dukes and Crips start fighting, after the PF vs Crips stopped. A fire was lite, then TMC vs PF vs ECC was world hood 2! And the unity of the hood was soon vanishing. No more break dancing, no more rumbles on the corner of 4th and soto. Aliso vs anybody up the hill. No more football games, housing authority police came in hard, drugs broke in, and good ole village was sinking faster then the titanic. cadilacs and regals were the new form of transportation. Where was they driving to? drugs bout cars, jewelry and more drugs. No college tuition? No re investing back into the hood? There was so much money going in and out of Aliso, we could of had our own private school, a bank, and the residents by now would of own 97% of the property there. A wise person told me, “We dont own the land we live on, we occupy it” So, today i see past residents beef over a street that was not ours, but could of been. My Brother just confirmed that ” Goyo” was not stab with his own knife but by a primer flats member at the candy store. My brother was with him. The guy asked where he was from. Goyo stated ” Al Capone” The guy pulled out his own knife and stab Goyo once and stood there for a second and let them walk away – I’m talking about kids 11-14 years old. They both walked back to Via Portola and waited for the ambulance.

I grew up in the Projects of Aliso Village. I’M from ALISO CAPONE the TINY LOCOTES click, and honestly all gangs in the AVP had their parade reigned on. The Potatoes (PF) controlled the projects, but only on one side and only in one corner of the projects (mission east way & via las vegas corners). ELA had their side over at the other end opposite of the potatoes (PF). We won’t count the AV Rascals or the AV Fellas (they were a football team) that happened to be punked into the potatoes gang or into ELA Dukes. TMC & Clarence St. Stoners or locos were not part of the projects, or at least the AV PROJECTS, they belonged to PICO-ALISO which is part of Pico Gardens. And them fools from ECC, they survived war with the Potatoes (PF) and the ELA Dukes, but they couldn’t hang with the us (AL-CAPONE)… why? We took their crack customers with our bomb ass cocaine, then they tried to get crazy with my homies and they had to pay the price. Why I know this? Because I’m one of the fools that use to love blasting (shooting) at the crips while they were in the patios (that they supposedly controlled) playing craps or listening to there bullish ass music. AL-CAPONE controlled the projects from the early 80’s to the mid-90’s, then the gangbanging rules came into effect and changed the whole game. All I can say is that I was there in the “80’s”. I remember – once again – the EEC always having there night time meets in the parking lot near Utah street school. I remember it was hell of crazy seeing fools drinking and fighting. Once again I was a kid (about 12 years old) so my memory might be alittle off. I remember Indio from Al Capone never backing down from a fight with EEC. Indio always with his denim Levi jacket. BB would always hang out Indio. Where am I getting with this is that we all live and then we grow up. I understand that most – it is hard to get out. I was lucky on two sides – Arturo (RIP) motived me not to get into gang life and my parents could not take the shootings on Via Portola. But this fighting is getting nowhere. I remember my memories but who is to say that my are the same as someone elses.
