Although it has been reported that the personal department will submit six applicants for review, according the police commission president, John Mack, the personnel department has the option of submitting more than six. Of that group, the police commission will provide Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa with three potential candidates for him to select from. After the Mayor makes his final decision, the 15-member City council will vote to ratify or deny the Mayor’s final choice.

The top internal candidates for chief include Charlie Beck, Jim McDonnell and Earl Paysinger. Of the applicants, 11 are outsiders who will receive the same amount of consideration according to the police commission.
