LOS ANGELES – After an 18-month investigation, 23 people, who are described as mostly gang members were arrested this morning in a federal drug trafficking indictment, alleging involvement in a methamphetamine distribution in and around the city of Whittier. In total, 31 defendants are named in Operation Grand Slam, which also includes six defendants that were already in custody and two other people named in single-defendant indictments.

The drug ring is accused of distributing nearly pure methamphetamine in transactions as large as one-half pound (8 ounces). According to authorities most of the defendants are members, affiliates, and friends of Los Nietos street gang, a small neighborhood gang that has existed in Whittier for many years.
The main indictment alleges 13 counts, and all 31 defendants named in the indictment are charged with conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine. Some defendants are additionally charged with possession with the intent to distribute methamphetamine, possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, and felon in possession of a firearm.

Although Drug Enforcement Administration Special Agent in Charge Timothy J. Landrum stated that, “criminal street gangs impact our communities through drug related violence as they attempt to expand their operations,” this type of violence has not been occurring in Whittier and none of the defendants are accused of committing a violent crime. Whittier has a crime rate that is lower than both the State’s and the national average, with 3.91 violent crimes per 1,000 residents last year.

Convictions of these drug charges can result in a life sentence, and everyone in the indictment faces at least five years in federal prison.
