A Reflection on a young Crip member, Keshawn Corbin, 17, murdered in South LA

Keshawn Corbin, a 17-year-old black male, died Sunday, Oct. 16, 2011 after being shot in Hyde Park, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records. That’s the extent of the information you will find in the news about the death of a kid who was full of life. It’s hard to accept that such a young soul who had such a high level of energy for life is now gone, forever.
This is the tragic reality that so often happens on the streets of South Los Angeles. Our youth with such dynamic personalities are turned into candlelit memorials more than anyone would want.
I don’t know Keshawn’s story before I met him, and our friendship transpired when we met at a non-public high school for castoffs. I’m quite certain his past colored with troubles. Keshawn made it clear to everyone at the school that he represented the Rollin 60’s Neighborhood Crips, which is a large and notorious street gang that stretched about 10 miles from campus, in the Hyde Park area.
Keshawn was a lot like the other young guys in his or any other neighborhood who gets caught up in the gang activities surrounding their neighborhood. He was constantly getting in fights with his peers on campus and having verbal altercations with staff members. Keshawn wasn’t only a trouble maker. He was something else, more than what others thought of him. He was likable! He was jovial in nature, and I saw a spark in his eyes and a big grin across his face.
I saw a different side of him. Adults and some of his peers enjoyed being around him, with his engaging jokester personality, and his familiar quotations from the rapper Nipsey Hussle (also from the 60s neighborhood) lyrics.
Keshawn’s taken life will leave a void with me and others who knew him differently than a gang member. Unfortunately, he lived a life that was not going anywhere society would approve of, and headed in a direction that would not make a positive contribution to our society. Shortly after leaving the high school, Keshawn was incarcerated in Juvenile Detention for armed robbery. He was, by and large, a lost kid, living a reckless life that was going to result in jail or death.
Despite the challenges he faced, it certainly does not make his death any less worthy. Instead it makes it even more tragic. His death is just plain heartbreaking! The tragedy is that he could have been saved if only there were more positive options to choose instead of the negative ones that lead many youths growing up in poverty to become involved in neighborhood gangs. For many, gang life is an opportunity to leave the hopelessness of broken homes and poverty to enter a daring lifestyle that provides them with a different kind of family.
It seems to provide these lost souls with pride and comfort in them selves that they don’t seem to find at home. Keshawn’s death also eliminates the chance for redemption somewhere later in his life. Imagine if he or the other senseless casualties of gang life had been given a couple of breaks here and there, there may have been a possibility for change. Instead, he is the victim of dying senselessly in the streets of South Los Angeles.
I probably will never know the reason Keshawn was killed or by whom, but given the reputation of the 60s Crips, he could easily have been shot by a member of his own gang. If not, then by one of the 60s many rivals, as they are arguably the most universally despised set in L.A. Who knows what he did that earned him this fate or what the circumstances were that early morning on 11th Ave, as he rode around on a mini-bike with his buddy.
What I do know is that when that vehicle pulled up and fired three rounds into his chest, shockwaves did not resound. It was summed up as just another gang-related killing in Hyde Park. It was not that simple to me and his family. Keshawn was a unique person that will be missed by us. Despite the path he led does not make the grief of a vibrant young life taken any easier to swallow for those that knew him.

Sad topic but well said about the tragic ending our young men encounter on the streets when they become entreanched in gang life. Hopefully, Keshawn’s story with help change someone’s mind about joining a gang.

Thank you for this story. I was Keshawn’s first grade teacher and I heard about his death from his fourth grade teacher. Keshawn was indeed special. You described that unique quality that he had perfectly– he had a twinkle in his eye and there was something that was so special about his smile. I was given some details about his life because I was his teacher when he was so young. He had a lot going against him, but like all kids, he still had so much potential. I wish he had had more options. I wish all the kids in South LA had more options. When I heard about Keshawn, I was heartbroken. I do not condone any gang-related activities in which he participated. I mourn the loss of a boy who could light up the world with his smile but went down a tragic path because that was perhaps the only one he could see.
we need to work harder as a society to make sure that there are more paths or options for young inner city youth that come from unfortunate backgrounds as this young man obviously did.

I’m sorry for his loss…but cuz was bangin’..that simple. I’m not say cuz deserve to live…or anybody for that matter, but the fact remains dude claimed 60’s. It’s easy to sit back and be like he was innocent and all. He may have been a good kid, but he was runnin’ wit the 60’s. Do you know anything about the 60’s?? I’ll just say they’re the cause of a lot of black men resting in cemeteries across LA. There’s a reason why they, along with the East Coast Crips, are the two most disliked Crip gangs in Los Angeles. Kids think listening and mimicking rappers like Nipsey Hussle, Snoop, etc is the thing to do..lil do they know when they join a set…they’re liable for anything their set does. Who knows what the 60’s had done to the 3 men who hopped out and ked him. At 1 something AM cuz was caught slippin’. who did it?? Anybody could have done it. Eight Treys, IFG’s, Hoovers, who knows. And what’s worse is some other black mother(s) is going to have to pay for these three black men’s deed cuz the 60’s will retaliate.

Hmm, the people exalting this poor dead boy must never have been robbed at gunpoint. “Oh, but he’s a victim of his surroundings!” So what, society should just let him graduate to murder and other atrocities? So that he can cultivate an environment of violence that will beget other young gang members and perpetuate this cycle? Face it: he chose a life of crime, and he became a statistic of that lifestyle. Wake up people.
Sounds like Fox News logic. Everything is black and white. Some people are good, some people are bad. The environment plays no role in people’s lives, instead good people make good choices and achieve the American dream and bad people make bad choices and live in poverty. Everyone is well aware of that line of reasoning. Of course, it has nothing to do with reality, but it makes for a convenient justification of accepting the status quo, especially for the haves…nonetheless, and I know you are not in this group “Logic,” but for a lot of people, it’s a sad story when a kid doesn’t see more positives options for his life, lives the gang lifestyle, and lives in the streets at the age of 17. No one is exalting him. I just attempted to humanize him.

Man I remember when this happened, Keyshawn was my Boi, tho I was from a Hispanic gang we had mutual respect for each other he was good peoples. I was cool with him and the guards knew that, so when he had just got released the guards topd me he was murdered driving a mini bike up the street and within that week being released he got ked from what I remember. I remember thinking like damn, he should’ve just stayed in here. Rest in peace huccabuck, I remember also he beefed it with some Foo from black p stones who ended up turning out to be a long lost cousin haha they where both tripping out.
