Jamiel Shaw’s gang association made him a target for murder, not race

LOS ANGELES – On March 2, 2008, Jamiel Shaw Jr., 17 was gunned down by 19 year old Pedro Espinoza, a 18th Street gang member who had been arrested on the same day of Jamiel’s funeral according to the Los Angeles District Attorney. Espinoza had spent nearly four months in a Los Angeles County jail for possessing a firearm and resisting arrest before he was released March 1, 2008 just 28 hours before he murdered Jamiel. Within a week, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency had filed paperwork naming Espinoza a potential candidate for deportation. If convicted for this crime, he will most likely receive a life sentence, so the immigration hold brings no heavier punishment for this offense. It turns out that when Espinoza was four years old, he was smuggled into the United States from Mexico and he grew up in a neighborhood just west of Shaw’s Arlington Heights home.

When the murder was reported in the local news, Jamiel was characterized as the son of a military mother, who was a successful high school athlete that was not involved in street gangs in any way. The media described this murder as “senseless” and when it was determined that Espinoza was an “illegal alien,” the story of Shaw’s murder was being highlighted by the media’s strongest critics against illegal immigration; Sean Hannity, Bill O’Reilly, and Lou Dobbs. According to Bill O’Reilly, “Jamiel was just walking around, he wasn’t a bad kid, he’s an athlete, he was at the wrong place at the wrong time” (March 24, 2008 – The O’Reilly Factor).
Jamiel wasn’t a bad kid, but he did have relationships with gang members in his community that led to Espinoza’s fatal assault on him. Jamiel lived in a community occupied by Bloods that have been at war with 18th Street for 12 years. With witnesses pointing out that a Hispanic was responsible for the murder, the only logical assailant would be a member of 18th Street, a predominately Mexican-American gang with very few undocumented members. Reports that 18th Street gang has a membership that is 80% illegal is false. Of the County’s total gang population approximately five to 10 percent are not US born.
The 18th Street gang formed during the 1960s in the Pico-Union community of Los Angeles and has formed over 20 separate gangs within Los Angeles County. Collectively they are the largest Hispanic gang operating under the same name, but in actuality, each of the 20 or so discreet 18th Street neighborhoods should be treated as individual autonomous gangs, since many of the separate neighborhoods clash and have internal rivalries in an unstable network. Reports that 18th Street as a “supergang” are media myths that also include gangs such as MS13, Maravilla, Surenos, Crips, and Bloods, all which are NOT gangs but umbrella labels that hundreds of gangs in Los Angeles identify with. If there were any truth to the existence of these “supergangs,” then the Crips, predominately black, would be the largest street gang in Southern California with approximately 20,000 members in Los Angeles County alone and several thousands more in the surrounding Counties. Since the Crips and black-on-black violence was yesterday’s news, our media is no longer concerned with their violence, even though they are responsible for the majority of gang crimes in our city. Mainstream media attention on gangs for some has now shifted to highlighting the violence that the smaller illegal alien gang member population have committed.
In the Arlington Heights neighborhood, a preliminary investigation reveals that the shooter from 18th Street went to the door of one of Jamiel’s neighbors and shortly thereafter saw Jamiel walking on the street, who was wearing a red belt, a common gang identifier in that neighborhood. According to a witness, the shooter asked Jamiel what gang he was from and then he shot him. All indications about Jamiel was that he was a good teen with a bright future, but what may have caused the shooter to single Jamiel out was his association or membership with the neighborhood gang including amiable relationships with Blood gang members. His relationships with these gang members should not take away from his good character nor does it justify his murder, because people such as Jamiel inevitably interact with gangs because they are in the neighborhood, on the school bus, protecting residents from other gangs, on the street corners and at the high school.
Many of our City’s 40,000 gang members in the database are teens like Jamiel, just mere associates that interact with those in the community and play sports. They are not of the criminal element, but based on his associations, law enforcement would categorize young Jamiel as a gang member, and if they read the following quote that Jamiel wrote on one of his myspace pages under “people I’d like to meet,” it would raise more eyebrows to his gang affiliation:
“I’D LIKE 2 MEET OTHER B-DOGS SOME FREAKY GIRLS BECAUSE U GOT 2 BE A VERY FREAKY 2 TALK 2 ME. SOME crabs SO I CAN BEAT THOSE c-monstas. BUT MAINLY OTHER GIRLS. aND 2 TALK 2 MY FREAKS”

The term “B-DOGS” in the above quote is a reference to Blood gang members, and “crabs” is a derogatory reference to Crip gang members. I would characterize the above statement as normal adolescent behavior but law enforcement will call this gang-related. Jamiel was not a bad kid, but he was specifically targeted because of his gang association. Some find it difficult to believe that such a talented athlete would even talk or affiliate with gang members, but college athletes and professional athletes alike are known to have strong ties to their neighborhood gang. Just last week, Boston Celtic’s star Paul Pierce, threw a Piru Blood gang hand sign to Al Horford after a spat during a playoff game that represented his Inglewood neighborhood in California. Stacey Augmon who has gang ties to the Denver Lane Bloods in Pasadena has had a successful career in the NBA and won a national title in 1990 playing for UNLV. In 1996 many skeptics warned about drafting Keyshawn Johnson out of USC because of his “gang ties” to the Fruit Town Brims but Johnson has had a hall of fame career without incident and now a commentator for ESPN. Baron Davis, the star point guard for the Golden State Warriors, has gang ties to his South LA neighborhood and he’s currently producing a film about LA’s gangs, and he is the godfather to Harlem Caron Taylor, the son of gangster rapper The Game. Additionally, Charles Jordan, a Blood member from the Mad Swan Bloods gang played six seasons in the NFL for the Miami Dolphins and Green Bay Packers and was known to tribute his gang with a hand sign after scoring a touchdown.
Jamiel’s association with the Bloods was strong enough to cause the shooter to target him, making this shooting purely gang related as the shooter’s purpose was to benefit the 18th Street gang’s objectives. When the shooter asked, according to a witness, where Jamiel was from, that provided the shooter’s motive lessening the role of race in this shooting. The murder of Cheryl Green in Harbor City in 2006, the murder of Kenneth Wilson in 1999, the murder of Christopher Bowser in 2000, and the murder of Anthony Prudhomme in 2000, all in Highland Park were black residents killed in purely racially motivated fashion where the victims had no gang affiliation in communities where black gangs were not even present. Additionally all the Hispanic assailants in the above murders were US Citizens.
In nine years as testifying as a gang expert in criminal courts, I have seen dozens of individuals wrongly classified as gang members, including mothers, brothers, and other relatives for just being seen in the neighborhood or having an association with someone who is in a gang. Read about Mario Rocha. This vague identification process that police officers use is the reason why the City claims 40,000 gang members with nearly 100,000 gang members County-wide. Many of these young men never know they are being entered into a gang database, and all it takes is an officer to complete a field information (FI) card and write “admitted gang member.” The purpose for including gang affiliations on as many FI cards as possible makes any offense that the individual commits in the future prosecuted with gang enhancement penalties even if the offense was not gang related.
I have always been against lumping people like Jamiel as a gang member, but because of this conundrum, we must look at gangs not as vicious criminal organizations, but as naturally forming delinquent groups, rooted in community, that include everything from non criminal associates to the hard core elements and everything in between. Many of these adolescent youth will mature out of the gang within their first year and never acquire a criminal record or commit violence. Gangs are complex organizations that require a deeper understanding than what media sensationalism and law enforcement depictions offer on the topic.
Of those 40,000 gang members in the City today, we should only be concerned with about 4,000 to 6,000 of those members who are the habitual repeat violent offenders responsible for approximately 90% of all gang related crime. The rest of these “gang members” are close friends, associates, peripheral players, relatives, school friends, “wanna-bes” and community residents. Assuming Espinoza is guilty, one has to attempt to explain why this murder took place before we even try to work at mitigating future violence in this community and certainly before anyone can draft law that is suppose to prevent these types of murders from happening again. Many will suggest that if Espinoza was deported, this shooting would have never occurred, but lets take it further and understand that if 18th Street and the Bloods from this neighborhood were not engaged in conflict, not only would Jamiel be alive, so would several other people.
Anyone truly committed to mitigating the violence between the Bloods in Jamiel’s neighborhood and 18th Street should try to organize a truce between the two neighborhoods that have been feuding for over a decade. I am certain that with proper fiscal resources being used to organize and sustain street worker’s efforts on the conflict between the Bloods and 18th Street, a resolution to this conflict can be achieved that would have a regional impact on other neighborhoods that will educate young people and save lives. Thus far all I have seen is a demonstration of politics among people who have no understanding on gangs and the problems that plague these communities while another family grieves the loss of a great son.

On another myspace http://www.myspace.com/185526611 page belonging to Jamiel, and last accessed on March 2, 2008, the day he was murdered, he makes some very interesting statements. He states:“IM A TRU G ND U DONT NEED TA KNO DA ALPHABETS TA B – SABG!! WUT DO U TELL A BITcKH WIT 2 BLAcK EYEs……..NUTH N SMUG U ALREADY TWIcKE!! 30k..eK AIM TRAKKBOIZ”
Translation:– “Tru G” means true gangster.
– “SABG” Second Avenue Blood Gang, a click of the Rollin 20s Bloods
– He spells the word “bitch” with a “K” after the “c” which is “cK” for Crip Killer. The letter “c” is also deliberately spelled in lowercase because this letter is synonymous with Crips. He spells the word “Black” and “twice” the same way.
– “30k” means 30s Crip killer, the main Crip rival of the Bloods in this neighborhood.
– Here is the irony, he writes “eK” meaning Eighteen Killer, a gang at war with the Bloods, and the same gang which Pedro Espinoza, Jamiel’s killer was from.

Peace will be achieved the day our city representatives will understand that violence comes from ignorance and poverty. If more money was invested in education after school program, people from the inner city will come together.
Police intervention doesn't always help it's still room for dialogue and understanding.

Let me begin by saying you sent your article to me via spam. I still read it as I happen to supervise a large Gang Unit. Two things I would like to point out about your article;
You trash this victim by insinuating he is a gang member. Then you try to come off as pious and not judging him, yet express your so called expert opinion that he would be classified as a gang member. You apparently do your expert testimony for any fly by night defense attorney willing to listen to your BS.
If you knew what you were talking about you would know that the law requires that an individual must first meet the legal definition of a gang member. THEN that individual would have to be involved in a gang crime before he could be legally classified as a gang member. Since the victim in this case apparently does not meet the criteria he would not be classified by law enforcement as a gang member.

You must "supervise" the most smart guyed gang unit on earth. Alex Alonso is right that the individual wouldn't necessarily need to have been arrested to be classified as a gang member in the gang database. That's true for injunctions and federal gang law. The LAPD enters gang affiliates in the data base for all of Shaw's Rollin 20's nhb gang, criminals or not.
This is a great article though I wish Alex had spoken more about the irony that this profiling of black gang members like Jamiel Shaw that jd80631 finds so objectionable is exactly what the Shaws are planning for the Hispanics with Jamiel's Law. And Shaw took his affiliation too far, in my opinion.
mr. Alonso never called Jamiel a gang member in the above article. I read it twice and he NEVER said that. Mario Rocha was convicted a committing a gang related crime and he never was even a gang member so I am sure that innocent kids are in the database.
Read it ONE more time. Jamiel Shaw called HIMSELF a gang member and LAPD agreed. A B-Dog is a Blood. Jamiel Shaw called himself a Blood. That's a gang member. Unfortunately, he paid with his life. This is so tragic but it was gang retailation against another gang. Just because he has a myspace and claiming to be a "B-Dog" and writing eK, cK and ect. doesn't mean he's a REAL Blood on the streets. Unfortunately there are a lot of kids that claim gangs on the net, but not on the street! It's called "net banging". From what I have heard, the DA has insinuated to Jamiels family that if they didn't back off their claim of a hate crime, that they would paint Jamiel as a gang member, or an associate. His father said he was a spiderman fan, so he had numerouse spiderman articles which are red. The powers that be are doing all they can to deny any brown on black murders as being race related. By painting Jamiel as a gang member associate, they can continue to ignore this fact, & deny any hate crime, blaming it on gangs.
That's very true, cuz when I was fighting a shooting case back in 2004, the police entered me into their gang database called "CALGANGS", and the detective got on the stand and admitted that I was entered into their database as a gang member, EVEN THO I NEVER ADMITTED GANG AFFILIATION TO THE POLICE!, what naive, weakminded people don't understand is that the police have the power to manipulate the paperwork, they can say and type anything IN FURTHERANCE of their mission to enforce the law, which means the police lie all the time, the district attorney also lied to the judge and said I admitted to being at the scene of the crime during the crime, when I clearly didn't, and the judge stopped that young liar D.A. in his tracks and refuted his claims, the bottom line, yes, what happened to Jamiel was tragic, but at the same time, he was no saint!, especially wearing a red belt, clearly identifying himself as a blood!, it doesn't matter if he for real or net bangin', if he was walkin' down the street wearin' that red belt, he was wearin' his "colors" for the hood!, bangin' bloods, bangin' on the streets too, when he said: "I'm lookin' for C-monstas to beat up"!
Alonso is right about the gang file. I was put on gang file at 16 years old, because I was talking to a group of geng members when police swooped up and patted everybody down. They took ID's and wrote everybody up. This is a black man y'all. Hes just telling the truth. Jamiel may have not been a hardcore gang member but he was onviously "claiming the hood" and the other dude must have known about it. Good job on bringing clarity to the story although this will rub a lot of people the wrong way including myself. I have followed Alonso for a long time, and he is the one of the only people out there that has taken the gang situation and tried to create an intellegent and unbiased understanding of what it is. You really do your homework, because I didnt know at the time that the impact of decisions made at such a young and uniformed age could make. Espinoza acted like cops act. They both consider you're in a gang because you know or look like a gang-member : it's called profiling. And in this case, even if it's not prolly race-related, Shaw is black and he knows some Bloods => He's a Blood. The result is a pure nightmare

Considering the young man's own statements, this wasn't profiling by the gang who shot him. He was claiming membership with the rival gang. A truce is needed. But all the hatred by groups who are using the grieving family and these haters care only about their own corrupted agendas.This article wisely points out that activists must get going with a truce.
…my prayers are with the Shaw family but I hope Alonso's article convinces them to cut off these haters and start demanding the leaders broker a truce.
Another excellent article by Alonso. I was also saddened by the news of Jamiel's death, and went by the media's version of it. I believed Jamiel to be an innocent victim of a brutal racial k-ingg. While race may or may not have had something to do with it, Jamiel's associations definitely did. As Alonso points out though, living in those kinds of neighborhoods, it's impossible not to interact with the people you grow up with and live with, even if they are known gang members. This is purely guilt by association, and sad nonetheless.
This was a brutal murder and the whole country is moved to grief at the loss of Jamiel Shaw. But this cannot end if we allow the forces of hatred to rule.
Please look up Walter Moore, who wrote Jamiel's Law. Where is the evidence that he and his affiliates care about young people in gangs? It was a terrible publicity stunt by some wanna be a mayor. Hey SMQ, I wouldn't assume that SenorGringo is a white, or "cracker" as you put it. There are many black residents that have used this murder against Jamiel to further their anti-illegal agenda, which is fine. I think that there are strong points against illegal aliens, but as it relates to gangs in LA, the illegal alien argument is very weak. As weak as saying that Jamiel was ked over race – which we now know was not true.
Alex Alonso is a wealth of information for gang motives and activity. The more people like him working to shed light on the gangs and the reasons they do it and understanding and helping them find better outlets the quicker the gang issue will be rectified. You can just expect to stamp it out with by bullying them and having gang injunctions, that will just make them more determined.
I knew this kid Espinoza personally. He was in custody of the L.A. County probation department in early 2006 when i worked at Central Juvenile Hall. When i first found out that it was him who had committed this murder i never believed for a second that he solely targeted this kid because of his skin color..If you ever had a chance to talk to Pedro espinoza personally you would see a lost, heavily entrenched gangmember who had so much love for his gang and so much hatred for any Blood gangmember…I personally remember asking him why he liked gangbanging so much and the first he told me was the love he felt when he was in the hood, he stated " i get this feeling like damn just everybody is there etc…"…..i thought that was really fed up that this kid felt so much love from something so negative….anyway just thought i'd share my experience with you all…..I know this may sound a little fed up to hear but Epinoza, as i would call him, had respect for me always even though i was law enforcement the kid had respect ….but damn he had so much hatred for blood gangmembers it was scary….

Very interesting account of Espinoza and first we have describing him at all. Judging from Jamiel's My Space page that Alex Alonso has written about, I would have to say the feeling was mutual there. I'm even more convinced that someone has to reach out to both gangs and arrange for a truce. It can happen, it has happened before, and I hope it happens fast.
I do know of a few youngsters, usually between ages 12-19, that will put up phrases and paragraphs that have gang-affliated writing in them on their Myspace pages, although they aren't official members. Some of them used to live in L.A., and moved somewhere else where nobody knows them and knows that they aren't legit…others who live in L.A. will do it because of who they grew up with, or grew up under.
Most of them will do it because they think it's "cool" but they never realize how severe the consequences can be for doing that.
There is no justification for murder.
I'd like to see a gang expert report on a family that has lived in a gang infested area and moved to a safer city, thus saving their family. Is it easy to just pick up and move? No. With serious perseverance, can it be done? Yes.
Parents/guardians need to be more proactive by moving out of gang areas, any way possible. To a certain degree, we are all a product of our environment. Change the environment.

I grew up in Pacoima, as a Latino living in a black neighborhood. My friends were mostly all black. A few streets down … there were Latinos.
Sometimes, the racist Latinos that didn't like my black friends would fight with the racist blacks that didn't like me.
But those of us that were in multi-cultural groups, remained friends regardless of the nonsense.

I'm having trouble with this article and don't understand your motivation for writing it. Simply put – your point isn't clear! You kinda jump around, and finish up the article essentially calling for a truce. Well – couldn't you have said that without providing the etymology and without reducing Jamiel to a "Gang Affiliate?"
To "say without saying" that Jamiel Shaw is "Gang Affiliated (not to be confused with being an official gang member per-se)" and to justify the shooters motivation for pulling the trigger is the first main point you made in the article.
In the same breath you flip the script and suggest that "ulterior motives" are the reasons that "Some" in the community inject a racial element into this controversy, and only do so for their own personal gain.
You eventually summarize your article stating that the conflict which caused the shooting should be the public focus – a truce if you will… suggesting maybe that the public should sanction a party where one day 18th street and the Bloods in the area shake hands, get together & play Dominos, and forever live in harmony – cause if there is a truce, there will be no violencia!
I might have missed something, but these appear to be your points. To this, my response:
Jamiel's family would certainly know their son better than you or I, and your professional assessment seems to be speaking way out of turn. What facts are you drawing this assessment from other than his (so called) Myspace page? Couldn't you have based your arguments on other – more concrete factors? Better yet… how is it even relevant?
Everyone in the community can appreciate your intensity and passion for chronicling street gangs, but my question to you is: How is your apparent agenda any different than anybody elses? You seem to have the need to prove to the community that immigration and Brown on Black violence aren't focuses. Can you justify that?
I honestly cannot figure out what article you're reading, because this article is very clear. Jamiel Shaw was of good character but he was murdered in a gang on gang murder. It's a heinous murder, everyone agrees, and God willing this shooter is sent up for life. But it wasn't a racial attack.

I just received your email, read the article and ALL of the comments. One of the comments stated that "There is no justification for murder." This is very true. Also, like the victim, I grew up in an area that is NOW classified as a heavy gang area. Yes, law enforcment DOES classify you as a gang member and/or associate if you are seen with other members. This is not always true. I grew up in the area, went to school with a lot of people, and yes some of them have become gang members. What, are we not supposed to speak and/or associate with people that we know because they are gang members? Our society is so twisted that they dont educate our children, give them options or resources. Its hard to raise a male child, whether Black or Latino, in an area that you can afford, which most often, gangs do live in, and make sure that that child grows up without any gang affiliation. Gangs are a part of our world, whether we like it or not. It does not matter what color you are. It is very sad that Jamiel was a victim to gang violence. But, we also need to look at how the media and others portray gangs. Even before Scarface, gangsters were portrayed as having all the women, power, money, respect and control over police officers. When they got ked, they were ked for something they believed in. Its the same mentality of gang members. They all want the same thing, in addition to the fact people want to belong to something where they are accepted for who they are. One of the comments made refered to broken homes. It is not always a broken home, it can be drugs (which the government put into our streets), no family, a person does not feel normal, other children teasing, poor and feel the need to make money, etc. I knew a guy, who was murdered, who joined a gang because 1) his mother and her sisters, were all on crack, his uncle was a thief, no where to live, and no money. Joining the gang eliminated a lot of problems for him. I am not trying to judge anyone, but there needs to be a better way for our children instead of death and jail.

I was listening to Mr. Shaw Senior regarding his son. There are two issues involved. The act of Jamal's law which is imperative for another avenue to control and remove illegal immigrants. One could only pray it will work, but just like the immigration laws on the books it will be adjusted and changed to be ineffective. The second issue as one parent of a teen to another. Mr. Shaw Sr. should understand that he is likely not as informed as he would like to appear. Teenagers have a life that is secret from their parents no matter how bright of a future or how great of a kid they are. This is inherent for all teenagers from all generations. Mr. Shaw is a prime example of a parent with his head in the sand thinking his child was never assoicated with anyone in a gang. I hope that parents take this situation and take a moment to check in with their childrens lives. The myspace page is just an example of what teens talk about without their parents knowledge. Parents can trust their children but should verify what is being said and where they are hanging out. The statement that Mr. Shaw made about knowing his son's friends and parents is naive. Friends of a child are little angels in front of other parents to avoid suspicion and other parents do not want to air their dirty laundry. It is sad that Mr. Shaw choses not to learn the truth but be defensive. Whether Jamal was affiliated with a gang or not does not detract from the parents desire for the new law, but it instills the idea that all teens are innocent. No matter how good of a parent reality is in today society it is difficult to keep up with your kid. Brainstorming of how to be involved or hear key statements that can bring a red flag up to be worried would be an awesome outcome of this situation.

This is a tragedy. An unnecessary loss of life. The "Gang Element" in large cities is out of control. Mr. Alonzo not only simpathically seeks to "Explain" what gangs are all about, he also minumizes their distructiveness. An innocent man was put to death on a public street for no apparent reason than being black. Mr. Alonzo would rather point out that Shaw was mistaken as a Black Gangster. Jamiel Shaw Sr. crossed the line tonight with the remarks about Alex Alonso. He sounded horrible on that radio show, I don't even believe him anymore, and I don't know why we're excusing his racist remarks when we would not excuse it from any political figure. I heard about this on the J&K show. Interesting article. If our leaders would enforce the laws on the books, crimes like this wouldn't happen. I'd like to see more proof that it was really Jamiel's Myspace page where those quotes came from. I've never had to live in a gang heavy neighborhood, but agree with the person who says Mr. Shaw should get out of there ASAP and move to Idaho or anywhere else. I don't understand why people don't just flee those types of neighborhoods. Illegal immigrants from Southern America have the sense to do so. That's not to say I approve of them being in this country, but they have the sense to move where their families can have a brighter future. Does anyone in these neighborhoods think they are providing a bright future for their children? No matter how good of a job you do, there will be other people who are threats .

I didn't know Jamiel and it seems he was a wonderful gifted person. But Mr. Shaw sounded very racist tonight. What I am reading on this board is sorrow for the family of Jamiel. I’m guessing that most everybody here, if they could, would bring him back. What amazes me is the lack of this simple logical conclusion. Pedro Espinoza was in this country illegally and subject to deportation. Had he been deported, he would not have been in Arlington Heights to murder Jamiel Shaw. Since nobody can change what happened, all we can do is look towards the future to prevent this from happening again. How do we do this? This issue is linked to the debate on illegal immigration in that it is an example of a preventable crime committed by an illegal alien. To take a position that he should not have been deported is ridiculous. Of all of the arguments advocating open boarders (eg jobs people don’t want, compassion for those trying to make a better life for their family, etc) none argue that foreign nationals should be allowed to come here and engage in criminal activity, or be a member of a criminal gang. He was not in the fields picking fruit, or cleaning toilets, he was in and out of jail and gang banging on the streets. Do we want people here gang banging? Of course not! So to get them off the streets we should do everything we can. Everything we can includes the deportation of illegal alien gang members.

The success of this Country comes from the decisions and sacrifices made by mostly White people. This is not to diminish the contributions of other races, but the truth is that those past decisions and sacrifices were what got us to where we are today. This was done by mostly White Americans. That is the reality. It may be that way because we were intolerant of other races fighting in our wars or holding public office, but we are still where we are because of those before us who were mostly White.
What is wrong with the decedents of those Americans wanting to maintain the integrity of this nation? What’s wrong with them wanting to maintain their language and their culture and their way of life? Their forefathers fought and lived to give us what we have today. Shouldn’t their children be allowed to enjoy the country their forefathers built?
With millions upon millions of South Americans illegally entering this country this is threatened. In many areas of California the landscape, language, culture and way of life are more similar to Latin America then to the U.S.. Mexico did not make the U.S. what it is, Mexico made Mexico what it is. It is unfair to supplant Mexico’s citizenry into this country instead of owning up to the responsibility it owes to it’s people by providing for them as the U.S. did.
This country has been enormously generous when it comes to allowing people to immigrate here. But that generosity seems unappreciated by so many who “demand” citizenship be bestowed upon those that decided they wanted to live here instead of applying and getting permission. It is this Nations right to decide how many foreign born people can come here. It is also it’s right to allow nobody to come here should it choose. To circumvent this is to violate the law and violation of the law results in punishment. What is disappointing is the lack of respect these people have for a Country they allegedly wish to be a citizen of.

The family had my sympathy but their loss of credibility on the subject of immigration is welcome because it's a bad law. I didn't know if they realized that brings heat on nice hispanic people. But don't forget, what ked Jamiel was a mentality and a condition. In this case his name happen to be Pedro, but it could have been anything. And he happen to be from Mexico, he could have been from anywhere. The root of this probelm is not Jamiel and Pedro, but the mentality and condition both were exposed to. If you just want to apply a band-aid to the situation, blame Pedro and were he came from. If you want to have a signicant impact on this ongoing dilemna, then realize it wasn't as much as were they were from, as it was were they were at.

I thought Mr. Shaw was a little edgy to, then I tried to put myself in his shoes and I realized there's absolutely no way I could put them on…..not even with velcro and a shoehorn….tough, tough situation. Thank you Placido for representing the peace. If we can learn anything from this awful tragedy it's that we can't cave into the pressures of hate. That is what racism is, isn't it? Something terrible happens and someone angry says, "Blame that race" and they do.

Well I guess this board has pretty much run its course. The allegation of racism has been slung. I can say that those accusing me of being racist know nothing of me or the feelings I have towards any race of people, but I doubt that matters. When my positions are countered with Ad Hominem, the party is pretty much over. I have been dismissed as a “White supremacist” (One Nation), “Cracker” (BGF), and others I’m sure. I am not going to get mired into arguing that I am not a racist cracker, because that would just be futile. My hope is not to sway the views or opinions contrary to my own, but the views and opinions of those reading. Maybe I have, maybe I have not.
To focus back on to the topic of Jamiel’s law, let me say this. It is a good law and great public policy. It does not matter to me if Jamiel was a gang banger or not, what matters is that he was a U.S. citizen in the U.S. and Pedro Espinoza was a Mexican citizen illegally in the U.S. Pedro was a member of a violent street gang. We as Americans have an interest in making our streets safer for all Americans (even those in gangs). Our streets can be made safer by removing from the country violent gang members. This is a simply, inexpensive solution that is easily implemented and that ultimately makes the community a safer place to live. A safer place to live should be the goal we all share.
I do not know why anybody would be against the deportation of gang members, but apparently there are those that are. Is it because you don’t want safer streets or the reduction in the numbers of gang members? What is it, what is the reason? About the only argument against the law that I have heard that makes any sense is that it may have a deterrent effect on illegal aliens reporting crimes against them. It is my opinion that this is an acceptable trade off for safer streets. Being a victim of a crime is a horrible thing, but suspending the laws of this Country is a terrible solution. It’s like passing a law that would prevent hospital workers from reporting to police a suspected rapist on the grounds that it might deter that rapist from seeking medical attention.
The other prevailing view is that deportation is not the solution. Well I never said it was, nor did I ever claim that it is all that we should do. Education, determent programs, criminal enhancements AND deportation (amongst others) should all be utilized to combat the problem. We achieve greater success when using a multi-prong approach, then single-prong approach, and greater success is something I’m sure we can all agree on.

Star L.A. athlete couldn’t outrun gangs

Stanford University called about Jamiel Shaw a week or so ago, intrigued by the slight but speedy running back for Los Angeles High School, the Southern League’s most valuable player last year. Rutgers University called a few days later.
The Shaw family already had reason to be proud. Jamiel’s mother, Army Sgt. Anita Shaw, was on her second tour of duty in Iraq.
On Sunday night, it was Jamiel’s father on the phone and then his son’s girlfriend, Chrystale Miles. Jamiel Sr. called to tell him to hurry home from the mall. The 17-year-old boy was three doors away when someone shot him to death while he was still talking on his cellphone to Chrystale, friends say.
Jamiel Sr. heard the shots almost as soon as he hung up. He ran out of the house, raced around the corner and found his son lying on the sidewalk, bleeding.
“She’s over there trying to protect us from guns and bombs, and then she has to hear that her son is dead over here,” he said of Anita on Monday. “I’ve got my own personal Iraq now.”
Los Angeles police officials described the k-ingg as random and senseless, cutting down a youth who had been doing everything right in his life – from hitting the books to never missing church to inspiring the Los Angeles High Romans to last year’s Southern League title.
A police spokeswoman said two Latino men pulled up in a car, jumped out, asked Jamiel if he belonged to a gang, and shot him when he didn’t answer. She said Jamiel was not affiliated with a gang and that detectives had no suspects.
Anita Shaw was flying back from Iraq on Monday, family members said.
“She called crying, saying, ‘Tell me it’s not my son,’ ” said Jamiel’s aunt, Althea Shaw. “She was so proud. She felt he had made it through the hard times. She still called him her baby, even though he was taller than her.”
Jamiel Sr. said he had “an 18-year plan” for their son, whose ultimate goal was to become a sports agent: “I would tell him, ‘I’m going to get you to 18, and if you do what you’re supposed to do, you’ll get to college,’ ” the father recalled. “He was almost there.”
The youth’s football coach, Hardy Williams, was with the family Monday at their 5th Avenue home, where Jamiel’s trophies and medals lined the mantel. His 9-year-old brother, Thomas, wore Jamiel’s favorite Atlanta Braves cap. Tears flowed.
“He was a very special kid,” Williams said. “Not only was he an outstanding athlete, he was a good person. I’ve never seen Jamiel mad. He had such a big smile.”
The coach described his standout player as “a Houdini on the football field,” and the numbers backed it up. As a junior, Jamiel rushed for more than 1,000 yards last year, averaging just over 14 yards per carry. An invitational All-City first-team selection, he scored 11 touchdowns, returned punts and kickoffs, and played defensive back. He also competed in track.
Hours before he was shot, Jamiel had spent the day at a football camp at Pasadena City College, Williams said.
“Stanford just called me about his transcripts,” he said. “Rutgers called a couple of days ago. He was just on track… . He was very elated.”
Jamiel’s teammates called him the “the spirit of the team.”
“I went through most of today thinking it was all a joke,” Colletti Scorza, an 18-year-old junior, said of his death. “I thought he’d make it to college on a football scholarship and then be in the NFL someday… .
“I don’t know how we’re going to fill the void on the team and as our friend.”
Scorza and another teammate, Rayvione Mouton, 16, had hung out with Jamiel on Friday.
“I remember I told him, ‘I’ll see you Monday!’ ” Rayvione said. “But now I know I won’t ever see him again.”
The two students said gang violence is less common in Jamiel’s neighborhood than in areas south and east of L.A. High. They also said there had been no tensions between blacks and Latinos. Jamiel was black.
Chrystale’s brother, Romans defensive end Willie Miles, said she was not up to speaking late Monday. He said she told him she was talking to Jamiel on his cellphone when she heard the car pull up and someone ask him “where he was from,” code for which gang he belonged to.
Miles said his sister heard what she later realized was gunfire.
“It was like a long gust of wind,” he said. “The phone went dead after that.”
On the sidewalk where Jamiel fell, mourners created a memorial of blue and white candles and flowers, L.A. High’s colors.
Jamiel Sr. recalled the horror of seeing his son down on the pavement, and said that his boy had never missed a game because of an injury.
“When he went on the field, he never came out,” the father said. “He’d never been hurt. This is the first time I saw him hurt.”

That's a lovely article but it has nothing to do with Alex's point that Jamiel Shaw was murdered because he claimed Bloods. Very tragic, but distorting the facts is to put more kids in danger. You're creating a false sense of security with this immigration ruse, when in fact Jamiel would be alive today if he weren't identifying himself with his neighborhood gang. Innocent as it was, and Alex has made it very clear it was innocent, it was still an affiliation that got him ked.

Some of my family came through Ellis Island. Some of them were sent back because of illness. Those that passed the screenings and followed the rules became citizens and have lived their lives here. Legally.

You’re right. The next president, be it John McCain, Barrack Obama, or *shudder* Hillary Clinton, will side with those pushing for Amnesty. I for one am disappointed that this isn’t the most important issue of this election, since it is the most important issue for me, and the single most corrosive problem this country faces. But I rest easy knowing that no amnesty will pass despite the beliefs or our future leader.
Two years ago was the best shot. The country was doing well financially, the climate was optimism, and Americans were spending money at an alarming rate. They were taking advantage of cheap illegal labor to do home improvements and even help them move into their new homes they could not afford. Well things are not so sunny anymore. We are in a recession, Americans are out of work, and the price of food and gas is ever increasing. Many Americans face foreclosure on their homes, and saving seems to be top priority.
A year ago Amnesty was on the table. The American people rose up and stalled the passage of that bill. This was at a time when America was doing great. To get so many to voice opposition at a time when most Americans were apathetic to this issue simply demonstrates the remarkably strong feelings held by the citizens of this Country. This will only grow. There is no question that most Americans oppose illegal immigration. The problem is that they are not vocal about it, or they are apathetic to the problem. Ask them if we should have stricter enforcement at the boarder and they overwhelmingly say “yes”. Get them to make a call or write a letter opposing an amnesty bill and it’s simply not going to happen. That is until the county’s economy sags. Now Americans find it difficult to find work to support their family, or they know somebody who can’t find work. Right or wrong, illegal aliens will be made scapegoats for blue collar America’s problems. They will galvanize and push for tougher laws and deportations. They will openly embrace that notion that American jobs are being taken from them (not all illegals pick produce. They hold many blue collar jobs traditionally staffed by Americans). The tide has shifted, the opportunity lost, amnesty will not become a reality.
The argument that those who oppose open boarders are racists will not hold water as the opposition swells. How can a vast majority of this country be “racist” because they want our laws enforced and our boarder secured? The end is near and I for one am excited.

Granted there is still a huge discrimmination towards minorities but that doesn’t deter the ones who want to achieve greatness from attempting to better themselves and their communities. If I were a respected African American leader I would despise the ones who spend their days “on the block” selling drugs and shooting each other over drug turf, and praise the ones that give up gang life to better themselves. To all the Mexican and African americans who are getting an education, making short and long term goals and attempting to achieve them, working a 8-5 or trying to start a business, you are the people that I look up to.

Its very sad to see all the replies and disrespect about ones race…I am a Mexican American raised in East Los Angeles, who went through a lot like many of you don’t imagine. One day some of you will realize how much damage we are inflicting to our selves. Mexican/Black don’t matter to me, I don’t judge or discriminate because of ones color or heritage. There are many good people out of all raises.. I Know many black folks who are good to me as I am to them. Speaking from experience gangs is not the way to live, for those who are deeply involved: the result isn’t nice, it’s a cruel life followed by a world full of remorse. I am not trying to preach to anyone, everyone will carry on to live the way they desire. I hope that some of your minds will mature and blossom to be able to see there is more to life than the streets. There are many Blacks and Hispanics who are smart and have a lot of potential to become someone in life. Don’t close doors on yourselves because of another idiotic person. There will be many and I repeat many who will provoke you to react in violence, but that is just a part of life. You don’t address a very important point which is that many of the Mexicans in Los Angeles County who are in these gangs, are second, third, fourth, and fifth generation illegal immigrants. The Los Angeles neighborhoods formerly occupied by whites, then blacks, are now predominately Mexican. South Los Angeles was primarily black 25 years ago. Now, it looks like Ensenada and Mexican gang members have participated in racial cleansing murders against blacks who have refused to leave.
The blacks (and whites) have moved to the outskirts of LA County and commute to jobs in Los Angeles or have moved out of state because they have been pushed out of jobs for which they might qualify. Mexicans have lowered the wages to such an extent that they have no choice. No one does. Secretarial and legal secretarial jobs now pay nothing. The flooding of Mexicans into the United States is 50% of that problem. How can they make all of those drugs, yet still not be able to improve their economy so that they don’t have to come here? They need their own revolution. Instead, they’ve brought their revolution to the U.S. Why?
Mexicans tend to hire their friends, relatives, and/or other Mexicans when they attain any type of supervisory position or influence. Mexicans are completely aware that their goal is to takeover the United States and its economy.
Mexicans are some of the most racist people in the U.S. against everybody. They hate whites and blacks, yet they want to be white because they have the same skin color issues in Mexico as we do in the United States, but worse. Ultimately and generally, Mexicans are the phoniest, most back-stabbing nationality of people I have ever dealt with. I have only met two or three in my 50 years who were trustworthy in any way whatsoever. They look out for themselves and other Mexicans, only. They otherwise fake being your friend; they are very good at it. They are always HR manager’s informant. Don’t trust a Mexican. EVER. Sorry, it’s just the truth.. Enough said.
