Why Is Hip Hop Latching Onto Molly?

The creep of Molly–the slang name for a pure form of the club drug ecstasy–into Hip Hop culture is seen both as a source of concern and an opportunity. Channel 6 WBJF broke the news that emergency room visits related to its use increased five-fold since the near past decade and implicated popular rap songs for spreading a world view where drug use can go without consequences.

Lord Jamar noticed the rising use of the word in Hip Hop with a snark: “Are they talking about Molly in all other genres of music? (…) Why are these n*ggas promoting it? Do they have a stake in that sh*t?”

Wiz Kalifa also said he had originally advised people to “chill with the Molly,” but later proffered, “I think it’s passed the people who are actually using it. It’s just money now. I would be crazy not to tap into that.” Besides, “It’s kids. They’re partying and having fun. I would never tell you what not to do. I never been that dude (…) so it’s like you could get with it or get lost, and I do not want to get lost.”

The powdered or crystal form of MDMA, shortened from the word “molecule” into the female name Molly, makes it an especially attractive figure to incorporate lyrically into Hip Hop.
