Macklemore Concedes Grammy “Robbed” From Lamar

Even as the Grammys are an occasion for musicians to celebrate their craft with their peers, artists have questioned the awards process, with rap being an especially contentious genre. Sweeping the awards in that genre, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis won Best Rap Performance, Best Rap Song, Best Rap Album, and Best New Artist, extending a message of positivity through the music in a performance that orchestrated a live wedding for 33 same-sex couples. But the titles granted by the vote of a multifarious audience did not stop Macklemore from speaking what the industry failed to recognize—that an award issued based on merit should have gone to Kendrick Lamar.
The Hollywood Reporter wrote that not only the rap committee, but the general Grammy committee had met prior to discuss whether, with his success, Macklemore should even be considered in the rap category.
Following the ceremony, Macklemore tweeted his fellow nominee, “You got robbed. I wanted you to win. You should have. It’s weird and sucks that I robbed you. I was gonna say that during the speech. Then the music started playing during my speech and I froze. Anyway, you know what it is. Congrats on this year and your music. Appreciate you as an artist and as a friend. Much love.”
While votes for the Grammys are cast from a population with rap occupying only a small fraction, the same cannot be said for the BET awards, where Macklemore also beat Jay Z and Kanye West for best group.
