Snoop Lion Welcomed As A Rasta By Bob Marley’s Son

Snoop Dogg/Lion’s shift in interests may seem rather flippant, but his easygoing manner is in other ways consistent. Some large figures of the Rastafari movement, including the original Bunny Wailer of Bob Marley & the Wailers, denounced Snoop’s announced conversion into becoming a Rasta by route of a film called “Reincarnated,” released this past July, which documented his transition from rap to reggae artist. Bunny criticized Snoop for his “outright fraudulent use of [the] Rastafari Communities personalities and symbolism” for personal gain.

Bob Marley’s son Rohan, on the other hand, assured TMZ’s readers that he thought Snoop was no Rasta Imposta. “Our father’s name should not even be mentioned in this issue because like a true Rasta, he would have embraced Snoop’s reincarnation and welcomed the positivity.” He added, “Why condemn a man for his love of Rastafari and Bob Marley?”

Snoop Lion’s recounting his own conversion sounds self-convinced at least–a sign had come to him in a temple. “The high priest, when I walked in, he asked what is my name. I said, ‘Snoop Dogg.’ He said, ‘No more…You are the light. You are the Lion.’ From that moment on, I had started to understand why I was there. We hadn’t even recorded one song, but I was taking all of this information and spirit.”
