Where growing up in a single-parent household is rarely ideal, for Raz Simone, it was a good upbringing. In the song “These Kids Throw Rocks,” the Seattle rapper related of his familial past: “My mama found truth in her stomach amongst some of the lies/ Getting raped by a close friend could f— up your life.”

“That’s real,” said Raz to MTV News. “They were friends for a little bit and then, you know, that was that.”

A heavyweight boxer and sparring partner of Mike Tyson “used to getting what he wants,” the absence of his father growing up was made easier by his mother’s candor. “It hurts just thinking about my mom. But growing up not having a dad — or not having him around or even knowing the story, didn’t hurt me […] because my mom didn’t have any anger behind it and I think that’s really where it was at.”

Raz is the first artist signed to the 300 label and recently released the single “Don’t Shine,” from his upcoming album Cognitive Dissonance: Part One.
