Detroit’s “Hip-Hop” Mayor Convicted in RICO Case

The charisma that helped propel Kwame Kilpatrick into becoming Detroit’s “hip-hop” mayor can’t save him from the fallout of corruption. Kilpatrick was found guilty of 24 out of 30 counts of corruption in a “classic RICO case” that also ensnared a contractor friend Bobby Ferguson and his father Bernard Kilpatrick.

The government’s case was built by a combination of secret surveillance and the testimony of Kwame Kilpatrick’s closest confidants who pleaded guilty to their own crimes and agreed to cooperate on the stand. The former mayor had also stepped down from his post in 2008 when stories broke of a sexual affair with an aid. His mother, former U.S. Rep. Carolyn Cheeks Kipatrick cried to see Kilpatrick being taken out of the courtroom in handcuffs.

Free Detroit Press noted that, unlike normal procedures where white-collar defendants are allowed to be free on bond until sentencing, government prosecutors argued that Kilpatrick’s repeated brush-off of court orders and parole violations rendered him untrustworthy. The judge agreed to keep him locked up as a flight risk. This comes as a great disappointment to a city whose urban ailments exposed through rap thought it had found a sympathetic champion to alleviate often overlooked issues.
