An issue raised by an interview with Vlad TV intimated that perhaps one can be an black actor in Hollywood without vying for street credit. Asked about a purported gang past, Nick Cannon corrected that he grew up in a neighborhood that fell within gang turf, but that and having friends who did get embroiled in the culture did not make him a gang member.

“I wouldn’t say I joined a gang. It wasn’t like the Boys & Girls Club where you can walk up and sign up. I grew up in a neighborhood in Southeast San Diego—this public assistance area called Bay Vista. And that was kinda the thing. The cats you grew up with.” Still, “during the early ‘90s when it was glorified I definitely was wearing my Dickies and certain colors and the Chucks.”

He remembers being shot at, thinking about the friends lost to battles in the Blood sets, so “once Nickelodeon called I locked in. I forgot about all of that stuff.”

Cannon recently appeared in whiteface to promote the release of “White People Party Music,” and despite a lack of resemblance, is rumored to be working on a biopic with blessings to play former drug kingpin “Freeway” Rick Ross.
