Florida rapper Laws’ new mixtape deviates from the familiar territory of hip-hop to classic rock, a move which originally puzzled his collaborating producers. The Yesterday’s Future project, created by Laws, the J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League, and Phan 4, mixes in the songs of classic rocker Paul McCartney.
“When Laws first came to me (…) I was kinda in my Hip Hop making mindset,” admitted Phan 4′s Feb 9. “It was very unique and he was very adamant in a specific part of the track that he wanted.” But a full length mixtape grew from that initial spark.
“It was like his interpretation of what Paul McCartney was talking about,” said Rook of the J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League. “I was like ‘yo, this shit was so dope that you should make a whole project.’”
Laws described his own process from having wearied of just listening to hip hop beats. “I went through all the solo catalogs over the years, and I really liked how different one Paul McCartney song sounded from the next. It kind of reminded me of me.” The tribute album is now accessible from numerous file sharing sites.
