Tupac is finally gaining mainstream recognition outside of Hip Hop, and not just token gestures. Last week, Variety reported that Shakur will be added to the Hollywood Walk Of Fame, while Playbill announced that the music of the late rapper is hitting The Great White Way in the next year.

Seventeen years after his death, 2Pac was named by Hollywood Walk of Fame committee chairman David Green on the list of honorees slated to receive a star in 2014. More surprisingly, a new musical will premiere on Broadway titled after 2Pac’s song “Holler If Ya Hear Me.”

The director of Fences, Kenny Leon, will helm the new musical with the blessing of the late rapper’s mother, Afeni Shakur. He told Broadway.com, “Tupac was a prophet and I want everyone to see that.”

The production is non-biographical, but rather: “An original story set in the present day on the inner-city streets of a Midwestern industrial city, the musical tells the story of two childhood friends and their extended families as they struggle to reconcile the challenges and realities of their daily lives with their hopes, dreams and ambitions.”
