Early female rap pioneer Ms. Melodie was confirmed to have passed away on Tuesday by The Urban Daily. She was the first wife of KRS-ONE and a member of the seminal Boogie Down Productions.
The Brooklyn MC made her first splash into Hip-Hop with the 1988 single “Hype According to Ms. Melodie” and released her solo album “Diva” on Jive Records one year later. The song “Live on Stage” from that album became a hit on the radio as well as in the new medium of music videos. She used her craft to preach nonviolence, and her death was met with condolences from fellow New York rapper Talib Kweli, who tweeted, “I’m Ms. Melodie and I’m a born again rebel. Rest in power sister,” referencing her lyrics in “Self Destruction” while she was with BDP.
Ms. Melodie died at the age of 43, reportedly in her sleep.
