The unprovoked massacre at Friday’s “The Dark Knight Rises” midnight screening in Aurora, Colorado has elicited condolences from people of all walks of life. Even those who have seen years of brutality were stunned by the senselessness of the incident, when former PhD and medical student James Eagen Holmes, 24, reentered a packed theater through an exit door he had left ajar to unleash tear gas and fanned bullets upon an unsuspecting audience.
Just Blaze tweeted, “Don’t believe in the death penalty. But put that dude in Colorado under the jail forever with nothing but the pics of those he killed.” Holmes’ neighbor Rachel Reed told reporters that he once “made some racially charged comments about rap” when he heard Lil Wayne playing on her jukebox. Authorities found explosive material and a “booby trap” bomb while evacuating his apartment, but there is yet to be a clear motive for Holmes’ actions.
President Obama expressed that he would lend the support of his administration to the victims of the shooting, numbering 70, of which 12 were fatal, and debates have already ensued about reviewing current gun control legislation.
