inner-city-dreamsBrought up in the neighborhood of Chicago’s first black street gang to later work with the Jackson family, Stan Sheppard’s newest project is a benefit album for families who have lost loved ones to gun violence.

“Inner City Dreams” is to feature hard-edged Hip Hop music with “no cursing, no reference to any positive aspects of gang life, any positive aspects to pimping” and, with artists such as Glblankes Malone and DJ Battlecat, “no watered-down sh*%.” With a father who created Vee-Jay Records, one of the first African-American recording labels, Shepphard should know. Following his own career to Island Records, Motown and Jackson Communications in California, Shepphard returned to Chicago to seek the advice of Father Michael Pfleger, who suggested connecting with the organization Purpose Over Pain.

“Most of these gang members are mollyied up, drinking,” said Sheppard on HipHopDX. “It doesn’t take much to fire up an altercation when you’re in that state of mind. They’re not even fighting over neighborhoods anymore. I don’t even understand it. I talked to the gangs here. I talked to Black P. Stones and Black Disciples and Gangster Disciples and Vice Lords and nobody seems to have an answer right now. Even the gang members are saying, ‘This is crazy.'”

The new album will be released through StarU Records, rushing to beat the summer heat, when violence tends to spike. Proceeds will help pay for burial and funeral services and give dignity to families in grief.
