Luther Campbell has been assistant coaching football at Miami Northwestern High School for four seasons and has more than 20 years’ experience with other stints in Liberty City. As of Friday he will be officially certified to do so.

Campbell, better known by his hip-hop name “Uncle Luke,” had numerous hurdles to overcome. Taking into account the rapper’s recording history while formerly a member of 2 Live Crew of songs like “Move Somethin’,” which contained sexually graphic lyrics, the administrative judge in Tallahassee, Florida, wanted assurance that he had the “required good moral character” to be an authority figure to students. According to AllHipHop, he was ordered to pass a series of ethics classes and prove he is up-to-date on child support payments, as well as give 30 days notice ahead of recording or performing any explicitly sexual songs to keep his teaching privileges.

Luther Campbell has gained respect over the transformation of his career into a writer authoring the Luke’s Gospel column of the Miami New Times and bringing attention to the plight of under-served minorities when running for mayor of Miami-Dade County last year.
