For skeptics who think the green movement and sustainability are only for the upper middle-class white yuppie, CeeLo Green begs to differ. The entertainer and his sister Shedonna Alexander recently launched the GreenHouse Foundation, a nonprofit 501(c)3 to foster a value for the long-term sustainability of the planet through programs that engage young children in their local communities.
Among their initiatives include scholarships and training programs, partnerships with environmental research organizations to educate youth and families, and providing resources to schools in support of a green curriculum. The first phase is rooted in hands-on activities, such as clean-up rallies and “School Waste Diversion” recycling competitions, that create a feeling of tangible rewards. Outdoor “teaching” gardens that students will tend themselves will start from the Southwest Atlanta Academy, where CeeLo attended elementary school, with aims to instigate a citywide growth of mini farmer markets.
The GreenHouse Foundation continues the siblings’ mother and grandmother’s legacy of community service. It is scheduled to inaugurate its “Green Garden Education Program” at Southwest on August 17th.
