A little over a month after NASA’s Curiosity rover was launched toward Mars, a signal from the red planet was beamed back to the space program’s headquarters. However, the highlight of Wednesday night’s broadcast of the mission was not footage from the alien terrain, but of Will.I.Am’s recently recorded “Reach ForTthe Stars.”
The song was created from the musician’s advocacy for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education to inspire the next generation of exploration and discovery. The idea to take a piece of earthly music out to space and beam it back to the ground came from a conversation with NASA administrator Charlie Bolden when he saw the artist profiled in the TV special “i.am FIRST: Science is Rock and Roll.”
“Reach For The Stars” was produced with the backing of two youth choirs and a 40-piece orchestra. Footage of the live broadcast can be viewed on collectSPACE.com bringing joy to the people gathered at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena witnessing the otherworldly event.
