Cornel West has been known to stir controversy across widespread media and class boundaries through his academic and popular entertainment work. Earlier this week he put his body where his mouth was. Citing the example of Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy against class inequality in today’s climate, West, amongst 19 other people refusing to leave the grounds of the U.S. Supreme Court, was arrested on Sunday afternoon by Washington DC police.

The Stop the Machine Protest in DC’s Freedom Plaza, following a memorial dedication to Martin Luther King Jr., grew upon the Occupy Wall Street movement taken up all across American, speaking out against corporate greed and war for capitalistic gain. West’s own involvement with civil rights activism include teaching positions at Harvard and Princeton, publication of the books Race Matters and Democracy Matters: Winning the Fight Against Imperialism, and forays into hip hop with spoken word and collaborative albums promoting the same accountability one expects from political agents in the music industry.
