Yet another rapper, approved by student vote, has received criticism for performing at a college event. Washington, D.C. based rapper Wale was chosen by popular student vote to perform at University of Mary Washington’s homecoming this Saturday. Following his concert at the Battleground Athletic Complex, three neighboring residents complained about the volume and Wale’s use of profanity. This prompted UMW President Rick Hurley to write a letter to the editor of Fredericksburg, Virginia’s  Free Lance-Star. “I am sorry that a high-spirited weekend on campus ended on such a negative note for some of our closest neighbors who were offended by both the volume and the content of the music.”

Although complaints are not unique, the upset about “use of profanity” was particularly strong. Wale has already performed at other various universities to similar reception, angering officials in the city of Baltimore, who were “deeply disturbed” by his use of racial slurs at a free-city event in July.

Hurley promised greater sensitivity in the college’s approval of performers in the future for outdoor concerts. “If there’s a crowd-friendly band like Train, maybe an outdoor concert would be appropriate. “
