Montreal seems like a breeding ground for violence within the hip hop scene. Less than a year after the death of Bad News Brown to beating and fatal shooting, the city lost a core music promoter in discovering new talent. Matthew “Dutch” Garner was identified amongst two people who were doused with flammable liquid and set on fire in a St. Henri apartment.

Although the police would not confirm the identities of the two victims, only that one had burned to death within the building while the other died later in a hospital, sources from the hip-hop community said it was Garner and a man named Einick Gi. According to the Montreal Gazette, suspects yet to be found were seen fleeing the scene. Constable Anie Lemieux conjectured that the double homicide could be related to drug trade.

Moe Arora said of his friend, “In the entertainment industry, people have big dreams but they don’t really put in a lot of work. With Matt, he had a great work ethic. He just knew how to make things happen.” Garner is credited with putting Montreal on the international hip-hop map.
