Public Enemy To be 4th Hip-Hop Act In Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

Public Enemy will be honored as an inductee to the Rock and Rock Hall of Fame, whose voting process underwent a few things changes this year. One aspect is the allowance of a public “fan’s ballot.” Rolling Stone opened up the election to its readers to cast their support for potential inductees, the top five of which comprise the fan’s ballot that counted as one of more than 600 to determine the Class of 2013.

How a rap group fits into rock and roll could be a head-scratcher, but Joel Peresman, President and CEO of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, explained that “the definition of ‘rock & roll’ means different things to different people, but as broad as the classifications may be, they all share a common love of the music.”

Fellow honoree Randy Newman said, “They’re always a little doctrinaire about what’s rock & roll and what isn’t rock & roll. It’s nice they opened up a little to let me in.”

The addition of Public Enemy makes four hip-hop acts in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, including Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, Run-D.M.C., and the Beastie Boys. The induction ceremony will be held on April 18, 2013 at the Nokia Theater and broadcast on HBO on May 18th. Tickets go on sale on January 25th.
