Who is Affected By “Game-changer” BEYONCÉ Secret Release

The biggest story across Hip Hop and Pop Music media the past week was Beyoncé’s secret release of her self-titled album, which many news outlets touted as a change to the music industry. The media trailed her tour and news of her having a child very closely, but when she merely announced, “Surprise!” on Instagram that an album was released in full on iTunes–with 14 songs and 17 videos–news reporters across the sectors were indeed dazed into accolades.

Bypassing the incremental singles release, TV appearances, and retailer partnerships to have her music “come out when it’s ready and from me to my fans” was undoubtedly an industry heist. Releasing it as a full “visual album” despite its minimalist cover, with individual songs inseparable from the video package and available only if purchased in its entirety, is bold given today’s penchant for the short soundbite and hit single. That none of the numerous collaborators or their staff leaked the project are also a testament to the star’s degree of involvement and control.

BEYONCÉ is reported to have sold over 600,000 within the first three days. What this means for artists who do not have the resources of the Knowles-Carte empire is yet to be determined, but media outlets like USA Today and The New York Times at least are expecting other megastars to step up their game.
