Rapper Wyclef Jean to run for President of Haiti

Wyclef has become a tremendous rap icon since leaving his native country of Haiti, and has contributed to its earthquake recovery by raising funds through his Yele Haiti Foundation. Now news has been circulating of his plans to run for President of the Carribbean country he has acted as ambblankador-at-large for since 2007.

The only statement released has been an e-mail from the family, stating, “Wyclef’s commitment to his homeland and its youth is boundless, and he will remain its greatest supporter regardless of whether he is part of the government moving forward … If and when a decision is made, media will be alerted immediately.” In an interview in November, he insisted that his interest is in encouraging youth to vote and not necessarily for presidential candidacy. “Do I have political intentions? At this time no. But what I do have is a movement – it’s called Face a Face.”

Although Mr. Jean is popular and frequently flies back for visits, advocating dual citizenship since the diaspora, many are in doubt about his qualifications or acumen to deal with the harsh realities of Haiti’s political climate. His own Yele Haiti Foundation has been accused of mismanagement of funds, let alone the nationwide task of administering $10 billion in reconstruction aid, dealing with riots, rebuilding of a landscape composed of tent cities and rubble without an economic plan. The most enthusiastic supporters of his “authentic heart” can be seen from his home town of Port-au-Prince. The declaration deadline is August 7.
