Alhambra is in the western San Gabriel Valley, about 8 miles west of downtown Los Angeles. It was originally founded as a suburb of Los Angeles in 1903 and is named after Washington Irving’s book “Tales of the Alhambra”. The city takes up a total square area of about 7.6 miles.
Since the 1950s, Alhambra has experienced separate waves of new immigrants, Italians in the 1950s, Mexicans in the 1960s, and Chinese in the 1980s. As a result, Asians make up the majority. As of 2006, 51% of residents are Asian, 35.5% are Hispanic, 28% are White, and only 1.8% are Black or African American. The total population was recorded at 85,804 in 2000.
Over 52% (44,678) of residents are foreign born, which over quadruples the national average of foreign-born people at 12.5%. 72.5% speak a language other than English in the home. 10.1% of families and 12.3% of individuals in Alhambra live below the poverty line, which is very close to the national average. 77.4% of residents have a high school degree or higher, and 30.9% have a Bachelor’s degree or higher, exceeding the national average of 27.4% of graduates with a bachelor degree.
Alhambra today does not have much of a gang presence but during the late 1970s and 1980s, the gang scene in Alhambra was heavily influenced by gang members from East Los Angeles.

Lomas was next door not in Alhambra although a few were from here and got in there. Sangra was more prevalent in Alhambra but never choose to make it part of their varrio, they went to San Gabriel.

I lived in Alhambra in the 70s.Altough there wer many Hispanic gangs around at that time the Lomas gang definately had the most influence.I had several friends who became members at elementary school age.

ALHAMBRA 13 was around in the 70′s and gone by 1980….there was a gang called POOR SITE, POOR SITE BOYS around the same time. I remember BRICK CITY in Alhambra, from the same time as POPS said from 1989-95.
The gangs name was poor side.
