The city of Artesia is located in the southeast portion of Los Angeles County. It’s known as one of the “Gateway Cities” bordering Orange County. It is surrounded on the west, south, and east sides by Cerritos, and Norwalk to the north. The city only has a total area of about 1.6 sq. miles. Artesia was named for the many flowing Artesian wells in the area, which made the village ideal for farming and agriculture. Today, one of the more familiar landmarks in the city is the Artesia Water Tower, which sits on top of an old artesian well.
According to the 2000 Census, Artesia’s population was 16,380. 44% of residents were White, 38% were Hispanic, 27% were Asian, and 3.6% were Black or African American. Surprisingly, there are a large number of Indian-owned stores and restaurants along Pioneer Blvd. in Artesia. Despite this concentration of Indian-owned businesses, Asian Indians made up only 4.6% of the population of Artesia.
Though Whites makes up the majority, 45.8% of residents are foreign born and 64.8% speak a language other than English in the home. Only 11.5% of individuals live below the poverty line, but the number of college graduates is 5.6% below the national average at 18.8%. High school graduates are 14% below the national average at 66%.
In 2008, Los Angeles TV news reporter, Chris Blatchford, published a book entitled The Black Hand: The Bloody Rise and Redemption of Boxer Enriquez, a Mexican Mob Killer, the story about an man that started off as an Arta gang member and risen to Mexican Mafia leader.
