I was born in Big Hazard in the 40’s and lived there till I left in ’58. I recall that the community was divided by the tracks from Big Hazard and Little Hazard. On Sunday’s the park was used by many nationalities including Italian, Mexicans, and blacks. The Italians would roll wheels of cheese down a path, next to the tracks. The purpose was to see who could roll it the farthest. After a while, the wheel of cheese would break and everybody would eat pieces. The Mexicans would play baseball across the tracks and handball wherever they could. Those walls hadn’t been built as yet. All in all, it was a great place to live back then. I attended Santa Teresita Church and Father Antonio Boquet was the pastor and Father Dignam was his associate. Did I belong to a gang? Not by choice.
