Varrio Nuevo Estrada is a predominately Hispanic street gang from the Boyle Heights section of Los Angeles. They formed in the Estrada Courts housing projects off Olympic Boulevard during the 1950s in response to the older more established varrios in the area taking on the name “Nuevo” to signify a new generation varrio.
Estrada Courts is known for having over 20 mural murals on a majority of their buildings, with We Are Not a Minority by El Congreso de Artistas Cosmicos de las Americas de San Diego (Mario Torero, Rocky, El Lion, Zade) painted in 1978 being the most popular mural.
There are a considerable number of VNE members that have been inducted into the Mexican Mafia with Eddie “Sailor Boy” Gonzalez and Mariano “Chuy” Martinez, being among the original members. Others include Ernesto “Chuco” Castro, Ramon “Mundo” Mendoza, Jimmy “Smokey” Sanchez and Max “Mono” Torvisco. In total there have been between 15 and 20 VNE members inducted in the La Eme, but they also represent a large number of members who have dropped-out of the organization and have also become informants for the government.
VNE has several clicks, including, TWS, Los Santos, DVS, MLS, CTS, PJTS, TPS and Tiny Lolotes (TLS)
