The San Fernando Valley
The San Fernando Valley covers the northern section of the City of Los Angeles and it is commonly referred to as “The Valley.” The Valley also includes the three smaller cities of Burbank, Glendale & San Fernando City.
The Valley has more street gangs than any part of Los Angeles partly because it is also the largest geographic area defined, and also the turf sizes to these gangs tend to be smaller. There are only a few black gangs in the entire area while there are over 40 Hispanic gangs and over 200 tagger crews.
Although there are more street gangs in the Valley relative to other parts of the city, the seven police divisions that patrol this area are among those with the lowest reported gang crimes and the overall lowest crime rates in the entire City. The neighborhoods in the valley are patrolled by the Devonshire, Foothill, Mission, North Hollywood, Topanga, Van Nuys and West Valley divisions of the LAPD. Although the Valley has not changed geographically, the LAPD carved out two additional divisions from their previous five existing Valley divisions, adding Mission Division in May of 2005 becoming the 19th LAPD Division and Topanga Division in December 2008 becoming the 21st and last division of the LAPD.
On an annual basis, these divisions are never in the top 5 reporting type 1 felony crimes. Although there are a significant number of gangs in the Valley, it remains one of the safest areas of the City to live.
