Varrio Westside 18th Street, West Adams is a predominately Hispanic street gang in the West Adams area of South Los Angeles located between La Brea & Fairfax from Exposition Blvd to the 10 Santa Monica Freeway.
Of all the 18th Street gangs in Los Angeles, this particular set was the first one to get involved into a rivalry with the Black P Stones Jungles during the mid 1990s when a click from this set attempted to start a click in the Baldwin Village (Jungles) area of South Los Angeles around 1994 on the south side of Exposition Blvd. Initially there were no objections by Black P Stone members to their presence in the Jungles, but once 18th Street members began to engage in criminal activity in the Jungles, the BPS members initiated a conflict that has continued for over 20 years.
Member Catarino Gonzales was found guilty in the 1998 fatal shooting of LAPD officer Filbert Cuesta. The prosecution sought the death penalty, but the jury felt that since Gonzales had no prior history of violence and no other circumstances that warranted the death penalty, he was sentenced to life without parole. In 2005 Gonzalez unsuccessfully appealed his conviction of 1st degree murder.
Pedro Espinoza is sentenced to death in the gang murder of Jamiel Shaw
Member Pedro “Darkie” Espinoza was found guilty of the 2008 gang-related killing of Jamiel “Duce Wild” Shaw Jr. when he confronted him over Shaw’s gang affiliation during a chance encounter near his home. According to the LAPD police report, Espinoza asked Shaw where he was from, a gang question, and after Shaw said “Blood” Espinoza fired two times killing him. The police report and other gang evidence was suppressed by Judge Rose during Espinoza’s trial so jurors and trial observers did not hear all the evidence.
