San Fernando is a city located in the San Fernando Valley, in northwestern Los Angeles County. It occupies 2.38 sq. miles of land, which is completely surrounded by the city of Los Angeles. The city was named after the nearby Mission, the “San Fernando Rey de España.”
While most of the towns in the surrounding San Fernando Valley agreed to annexation by Los Angeles in the 1910s, eager to tap the bountiful water supply provided by the newly opened Los Angeles Aqueduct, San Fernando’s abundant groundwater supplies allowed it to remain a separate city. Over the years, San Fernando has seen a demographic shift from White to Hispanics due to an an aging population and relocation of middle-class whites to other parts of the San Fernando Valley. There has also been movement into the Santa Clarita and Antelope Valleys to the north. Income levels have declined as a result.
According to the 2008 US Census, the total population of San Fernando is 24,252 people. Over 90% of residents have some type of Hispanic makeup, 42.8% of residents are considered some White, 1% are Asian, and there were no recorded Blacks or African Americans. 38.3% of residents are foreign born. 11.7% of residents have a bachelor’s degree or higher, and 51.2% of residents have a high school degree. Only 13.6% of families and 18.1% of individuals live below the poverty line.
