City of Industry, California – Hispanic gangs

Home > Hispanic Gangs > City of Industry

The City of Industry is an industrial suburb of Los Angeles, located in the San Gabriel Valley, about 22 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. The city has a total area of 11.9 sq miles. The City of Industry is aptly named for its vast amount of industrial areas. The zoning is primarily devoted to business. 92% is designated for Industrial and 8% is commercial. There are over 2,500 business and over 80,000 jobs within Industry, but only 777 residents were recorded in the 2000 census. The reason City of Industry became its own municipality was to prevent surrounding cities from annexing the industrial land for tax revenue.

The few residents of the city live their because they either were there before the 1957 incorporation or are on properties near City Hall or the local Golf Clubs. Many headquarters for big companies such as FedEx, Alta Dena, Hot Topic, and DIRECTTV are located in the City of Industry. Possibly as a result of its sparse population base, City of Industry is also home to an unusual number of strip clubs, including the headquarters of the Spearmint Rhino chain.

As of the 2000 census, there were only 777 residents in the City of Industry. 60.2% are Hispanic, 54.8% are White, 4.2% are Black or African American, and 3.9% are Asian. 17.4% of families and 14.5% of individuals live below the poverty line. Ironically, under half (43.5%) of residents of the City of Industry are actually in the labor force.
