Irwindale is a city in the San Gabriel Valley, in Los Angeles County, located just southwest of Azusa, sitting on a 9.5 sq. mile plot of land. Irwindale has relatively few residents due to its large areas of rock quarries, which are the major revenue source for the city. The Irwindale Speedway is also located in the city, as is the Santa Fe Dam Recreation Area near the San Gabriel River, and a plant of the Miller Brewing Company.

Unlike other low population cities in LA County, such as Industry and Vernon, there are actual neighborhoods in Irwindale, along with police and library services, a skate park, a teen center, a senior center, and a public gymnasium. The housing is centered near the southeast corner of Arrow Highway and Irwindale Avenue, with a small tract of housing in the southwest corner of the city near Cypress Avenue.

According to the 2000 US Census, the total population of Irwindale is only 1,446 people. 88.3% of residents are Hispanic, 47% are White, 28.4% 1.7% are Asian and .4% are Black or African American. 68.5% speak a language other than English in the home. 7.3% of residents have a bachelor’s degree or higher and 60% have a high school degree. 17.7% of families and 16.4% of individuals live below the poverty line.
