West Rancho Dominguez (formerly Athens) is an unincorporated community in Los Angeles County. It lies at an elevation of It is located in the South Los Angeles region, near the intersection of the Century and the Harbor freeways. To the south is the city of Gardena, to the west is Hawthorne, and the to the east are the unincorporated community of Willowbrook and the community of Watts. West Rancho Dominguez contains Athens County Park, Helen Keller County Park, and the Chester L. Washington County Golf Course.

The total population of West Rancho Dominguez is 9, 101 according to the 2000 census. African Americans make up a 56.1% majority of Athens, followed by Hispanics at 39.3%. Whites make up 12.9% and Asians are only 1.6% of the population. The average household size is 3.54 and the average family size is 3.83.

Only 12.1% of residents graduated with a Bachelor’s degree or higher, and 62.2% graduated with a high school degree or higher. Only 27.3% are foreign born residents and 40.3% speak a language other than English in the home. 25.8% of individuals live below the poverty line, which over doubles the national average.
