Lancaster is the 8th largest city in Los Angeles County, located in the Antelope Valley, about 70 miles northwest of downtown. It is separated from the Los Angeles basin by the San Gabriel Mountain Range. The city has a total area of 94.2 sq. miles. It is the second-largest city on the California side of the Mojave Desert.
Lancaster is home to many employees of Edwards Air Force Base, as well as to employees of Boeing, Lockheed, and Northrop Grumman. Lancaster has a family income above the national average and a median home price below the national average, so 70% of residents in Lancaster own their own homes. The California Poppy Reserve, 20 miles west of Lancaster, boasts one of California’s most abundant crops of the state flower.
According to the 2008 census, the total population for Lancaster is 152,184. 56.5% of residents are White, 36.5% are Hispanic, 4.3% are Asian and 19.2% are Black or African American. 27.2% speak a language other than English in the home. 16.8% of residents have a bachelor’s degree or higher and 79.3% have a high school degree. 17.9% of families and 20.4% of individuals live below the poverty line.
