Long Beach is the fifth largest city within California, located on 65.9 sq miles of property along the southern coast of Los Angeles County. It is about 20 miles south of downtown Los Angeles. The port of Long Beach is one of the world’s largest shipping ports. The city also has a large oil industry, found both underground and offshore. In the1950s, the city was predominantly Caucasian and nicknamed “Iowa by the Sea”. The city was a major port of entry for European, Asian and Latin American immigrants headed to Los Angeles in the 20th century.
According to a report by USA Today in 2000, Long Beach was the most ethnically diverse large city in the United States. Its Asian community includes a large Cambodian community, the second-largest Cambodian community outside of Asia. It has a relatively high proportion of Pacific Islanders (over 1% as of the 2000 Census). Long Beach also used to have a large Japanese population before WW2, but after the attack on Pearl Harbor and the subsequent move of Japanese residents to interment camps, many did not return after being released.
According to the 2008 US Census, the total population of Long Beach is 462,556 people. 40.2%% of residents are Hispanic, 44% are White, 13.2% are Asian, and 13.4% are Black or African American. 27.5% of residents are foreign born, and 45.8% speak a language other than English in the home. 27.9% of residents have a bachelor’s degree or higher and 77.9% have a high school degree. 15.3% of families and 19.1% of individuals live below the poverty line.
A majority of gangs in Long Beach are located in the southwest section of the city, near the 710 Long Beach Freeway. This section is the poorest area of Long Beach with a median income of $23,000 per year and it is home to about 20 street gangs.
