The City of South Gate is the sixteenth largest city in Los Angeles County and is 7.5 square miles. South Gate is located just 12 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles. According to the 2000 US Census, there were 96,375 residents, 23,213 households, and 20,063 families residing in the city. As of January 1, 2009, the population of South Gate was 102,770.
In 2000, 19.2% of the population and 17.4% of families were below the poverty line. The estimated median household income in 2008 was $39,993.
Racial make-up of the city is Hispanic – 88,669 (92.0%), White alone – 5,755 (6.0%), Asian alone – 725 (0.8%), Black alone – 632 (0.7%), Two or more races – 315 (0.3%), American alone – 157 (0.2%), Other race alone – 71 (0.07%), Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander alone – 51 (0.05%)
