Whittier is a city in Los Angeles County, California about 12 miles southeast of Los Angeles. Like nearby Montebello, the city is considered to form part of the Gateway Cities and the southeast area of the county. Whittier is a charter law city and was incorporated in 1898. Whittier has a total area of 14.8 sq. miles of land. The citizens of Whittier named they city after John Greenleaf Whittier, a respected Quaker poet.
According to the 2008 US Census, the total population of Whittier is 88,207 people. 64.9% of residents are Hispanic, 57.1% of residents are White, 2.9% are Asian, and .8% are Black or African American.
20.4% of residents are foreign born, and 43.6% speak a language other than English in the home. 22.5% of residents have a bachelor’s degree or higher and 81.3% of residents have a high school degree. 7% of families and 5.2% of individuals live below the poverty line.
