Los Angeles: On Friday, August 13, 2004, at 9:30 a.m., Chief William J. Bratton will announce the successes of a Gang Injunction against the Wilmington Street Gang which has had a positive impact on an entire community.

The recently granted Wilmington Gang Injunction was the result of a three and one-half year project that was focused on violent gang crime in Wilmington. Since the injunction began on March 19, 2004, crime has been reduced significantly.

Over the last three years, officers from Harbor Area assumed tasks outside the normal course and scope of their duties in an effort to solve the substantial criminal street gang problem. The supervisors, committed to solving and preventing crime, encouraged those who worked for them to help complete tasks using new and innovative tools.

On Friday, August 13, 2004, at 10:00, the Los Angeles City Council will be commending a group of police officers in City Hall chambers. The officers to be commended include two Lieutenants, five sergeants and 61 police officers. Additionally, Los Angeles Deputy City Attorneys Elizabeth Greenwood and Julie Bishop will also be commended. Without these individuals, completing this project would have been impossible.

Details of the Wilmington Gang Injunction and the boarders of the “Safety Zone” will be available at the news conference.
